simple parallel computing on single multicore machine
Dear List,
the advent of multicore machines in the consumer segment makes me wonder
whether it would, at least in principle, be possible to divide a
computational task into more slave R processes running on the different
cores of the same processor, more or less in the way package SNOW would
do on a cluster. I am thinking of simple 'embarassingly parallel'
problems, just like inverting

PRI dead in USA?
Hi-
Because a majority of my customers are in Europe, I've gotten quite used to
working with ISDN (PRI) and BRI on a regular basis. Recently one of my
customers asked me if I could terminate a few lines locally here in the USA
(California), so I called up SBC to enquire as to how much it would cost to
install a BRI here.
Although the rates were reasonable (except the installation), I got

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. dinput patches for Wine 1.4
Hi everyone, I've been installing software on my Mac using Wine for quite some time
Mac OS X 10.6.8

ATI X1600 128 MB
Not the best specs but you'd be surprised at what will run on such an old rig.
My main inquiry for this post is concerning the Stalker series and the patch that fixed the mouse issues present in Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat pre 1.4 stable. Since around the 1.3.24

Populating form elements with AJAX
Hi All!
Is it possible to populate a form (or certain elements) with the shipped
AJAX library? When using link_to_remote it seems that only innerHTML of
a DOM element can be updated, but I would like to set the value of a
text field (or perhaps multiple).
Greetings,
Wouter

some clarity Re: HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
I'd note that the mkisofs man page listed about a dozen different
formats used in various contexts to store Mac resource forks and
finder metadata in various contexts. I'd imagine the advent of MacOSX
(with UFS support) has narrowed the field of what options are common
somewhat, but it's an area where a lot of ad-hoc solutions made it
out to the real world. On the other hand, the

Packages in R & Java
Yes, lots of packages do use C/Fortran code ... it would be great if there
were more packages that are "pure R" especially since the advent of S4
classes and namespaces.
Is it worth suggesting that we create a designation "pure R" for packages
that have no external source code and encourage more of these? Indeed, now
the number of packages is so big could they be classified to

Dovecot / Sieve
Hi,
As the "new Sieve implementation" is using a "gratefully stolen copy of
deliver.c from dovecot" (i.e. a dirty code in mail-raw.c), would it be
possible for the Sieve piece
1 - to be using files from dovecot directly rather than
copying&changing it (which is very bad for maintenance)
2 - to be incorporated in the hg/mercurial tree of dovecot ?
Thanks a lot

CentOS7 changes strike again.
Still in the process of migrating from an old CentOS5 server to a brand
new CentOS7.
After finally getting Virtualbox-5.0 installed and a new Wondoze10 Pro
installed it became time to shift the data from the old server to the new.
The old server is headless and I installed the old WindozeXP into the
Virtualbox4.x via the command line.
To do some of the admin I needed to attach to the windoze

Error: Rate Limiting only available with ACCEPT, DNAT[-], REDIRECT[-] and LOG
I think it would be nice to be able to rate limit an action, too..
suppose I have an action named Accept_good_source :
ACCEPT - - tcp - 1024:65535
ACCEPT - - udp - 1024:65535
and that i want to use it in an action called AllowCVS,
i can''t limit the cvs usage, but only the general use of
Accept_good_source...
same goes for userset...
as each rule will give one iptables command,

Getting classic BIOS and UEFI boot on the same disk?
I just created something very similar for one of my own projects. I have a
disk image that you can "dd" onto a hard drive or USB drive and a bash
script demonstrating how it was done here:
https://www.syslinux.org/archives/2019-July/026476.html
You don't actually need the patch for the dual BIOS/UEFI support. The patch
in the above link is just to enable the reading of config

is a self signed certificate always invalid the first time?
I have looked at let's encrypt. Key issue for me is having to add a lot
python stuff that would otherwise not be on any server.
Again, All CA's like "Let's Encrypt" - and others that are accepted by
the "majors", e.g., Windows, Mozilla make it much easier for the
"random" user to use anything you protect with SSL (better TLS) without
them having to

metadata on the wiki
The biggest problem with Vorbis comments are too loose specifications and
too little standardisation.
Another problem is attribution of involved parties. Currently only the
ARTIST field name is supported in software. More standardised field names
need to be worked out for organisations and persons involved in the
production of the recording. See:

[LLVMdev] FW: A message to post please (EDITED, thanks): "Position available: C / C++ Developer: Compiler & Tools SDK"
Hi,
Hope you can help. Grateful for your time.
I was in touch recently requesting the drop opportunity below be shared
with your distribution list (it was originally declined as hadn't provided
sufficient context about LLVM. I provided the edited version, below, on
27th of January).
Please can you confirm, has this been sent out to your distribution list?
We have not had much response, so
