wicked wikis for R
...ld be very useful. As the mailing list grows, so does the wiki, except the information flow from the mailing list is more controlled and fine-tuned as to what goes in there and what stays in the mailing list. Among others, here's one long-term benefit for the newbies. Instead of people getting admonished/thrashed with harsh expressions/advices like "go see the mailing list publishing etiquettes", or "you should search the archives and help files, and read all manuals, and ask others first before posting here..." (which can turn away many a newcomer from posting or using the ma...

How to change the value of a class slot
...defined an S4 class with a slot i. Then I wrote a regular function that attempted to increment i. This didn't work, apparently because of the general rule that a function can't change the values of its arguments outside the function. I gather there are ways around it, but the Green book admonishes "cheating on the S evaluation model is to be avoided" (p. 190). Thinking that class methods needed to an exception to this rule, I then tried setMethod with the function I had written. However, when I called the function I got > setMethod("nextPath", "CompletePathMak...

I felt the reply you got was kinda rude and I had the impression the poster didn't actually read what you wrote, preferring to infer insult where none was offered. In my opinion, the folks who admonished you don't know what they're talking about.

Normality test
Dear Sir, I am writing to inquire about normality test given in nortest package. I have a random data set consisting of 300 samples. I am curious about which normality test in R would give me precise measurement, whether data sample is following normal distribution. As p value in each test is different in each test, if you could help me identifying a suitable test in R for this medium size of

[ext3] umount /var ext3 partition
...Should I just include /var in the list of parititions that are skipped on the first umount attempt? I have no particular reason to think this will work since the halt script will later proceed to attempt to remount everything in read-only mode which I expect to fail also. Any recommendations or admonishments would be appreciated, Shane

If you're having a problem with R CMD check, include the relevant message inline. If you're in violation of this code, one of the moderators will send you a gentle admonishment off-list. For more about such "Netiquette", read the Debian code of conduct. Note that there may be some overlap of topics with the R-devel mailing list notably as before the existence of R-package-devel, many package developers have used R-devel for questions that are now meant...

FreeBSD - Secure by DEFAULT ?? [hosts.allow]
Hi, I need to know what the implications are to make use of the hosts.allow file on a FreeBSD Production Server (ISP Setup)? The reason I'm asking, is that I've recently decommisioned a Linux SendMail Server to a FreeBSD Exim Server, but with no Firewall (IPTABLES) yet. Besides the fact that it only runs EXIM and Apache, is it necessary to Configure rc.Firewall? or can I only make use of

[LLVMdev] omission: clang-cc -MD -MF -c -fPIC
Hi, I do not really have much direct control over the compile lines any more. I guess I could code up a wrapper for your wrapper so that the libtool wrapper would be happy, but could you all consider libtool built projects and embed the necessary option stripping in your clang-cc thing? Thank you. Regards, Bruce make[2]: Entering directory `/home/bkorb/ag/ag/snprintfv' /bin/sh ../libtool
