[newbie] mesuring adequation of normal distribution with a variable
Hello,
I'm looking for a way of mesuring the adequation of a given variable with
the normal distribution. Does R provide a standard test for this purpose,
or is there a statistical methodology?

Vector Autoregeressive Models: Adequation tests to perform
Hello,
I am currently testing a Vector AR of dim 3 over not a lot of data (135
* 3 observations) . To test the adequation of my vecot ar, I use the
Schwarz Bayesian Criterion and the classic modified Portmanteau test on
the residuals (it can be found for instance in
http://www.iue.it/PUB/ECO2004-8.pdf , page 15) -> the null hypothesis is

1_ The NEWS file would not be an adequate place to post such
information, for several reasons.
2_ Expressing the problem with NASM in such a way would be very
inaccurate. The problem is in NASM 2.11.06, and only in that version.
The problem is not in Syslinux, and many other versions of NASM (such
as 2.11.05) have no problem.

Checking for adequate disk space
...re were none. After spending about an hour debugging the script I
learned the problem was not the script, but I ran out of disk space. But
write.table, along with the rest of the script, still continued as if
nothing was wrong.
My question is: How can I programmatically determine if a user has
adequate space to use write.* and then throw an error if they don't? I'm
running R on Linux (RHEL4). For the short term, I will accept Linux-only
solutions but would prefer an OS-free solution.
My quick-and-dirty solution is to use:
write.csv(x, file)
if(file.info(file)["size"] == 0)...

minimal adequate model
I am trying to model a set of data that I am working on using contrasts.
Since the data set is too large, I am interested in scripting the entire
process to arrive at the minimum adequate model. Has anyone in the group
done this before? If you I would appreciate their comments.

things will eventually happen.
Generally speaking, the BIOS itself has to support (understand) the
values that are being used in the MBR.
With the adequate values, the MBR and the VBR still need to contain
the correct "executable" code.
If all prior steps are OK, once SYSLINUX has the control it has to be
able to find the necessary files in the adequate location. This part
depends on the instructions and scripts from each project, like

Is my configuration adequate? (For whole disk backup)
Hi all.
I need to backup a server (actually web, dns and mail) placed on
Internet, and write data on a computer inside the intranet of our
company. I have read good things about rsync from the mailing list and
the man pages, and I know that it can represent the solution for what
I'm looking for.
However, since I'm new to rsync, if you can give me your opinion about
my configuration I

Is a VM an adequate environment for simulating scenarios and limits of BTRFS?
Greetings all and pardon my intrusion,
I''m just a basic home user running a file server for mostly large
media files (write once, read many). Some dynamic working files, but
a much smaller portion. The OS will not run on BTRFS, nor will it do
much in the way of running services other than what''s required for a
basic file server. My server hardware is mostly salvaged, 2 GB of

Hardware requirements question
...m for our Trixbox setup. We will
have 7-10 internal phones, and maybe 3-4 max outbound connections at a
time. We will have some type of menu system for inbound callers. At
this point I'm planning on connecting to a SIP provider over the
internet for service. Do you think the hardware is adequate? If
there's a chance its not enough horsepower I want to find a different
server.
Thanks much,

[OT] 'gv' and fractional points
...data to R and try your own analyses on
these data, and compare with what the article does.
However, this little window only gives the numbers
in whole points. Say a smallish graphic may print
out 3 inches wide or high. Then you get precision
of 1/216 per 3 inches or 0.4% of full scale. This
can be adequate on many occasions, but can be on
the coarse side on other occasions.
Even for a 6-inch-wide/high graph, you only get down
to 0.2% of full scale.
If it were possible to induce 'gv' to display these
coordinates in tenths of a point, then much greater
precision (as adequate as one can expect...

likelihood ratio tests using glmmPQL
I am analysing some binary data with a mixed effects model using
glmmPQL.
I am aware that I cannot use the AIC values to help me find the minimum
adequate model so how do I perform likelihood ratio tests? I need to
fix on the minimum adequate model but I'm not sure of the proper way to
do this.
Thank you very much,

using the bootstrap method for latent class analysis
...latent class analysis please.
My main question is: can the bootstrap procedure sometimes be less precise
than the non-bootstrap procedure when carrying out latent class analysis?
I am asking this question because I carried out some analyses and when I *did
not* use the bootstrap procedure I found adequate fit for one of the
models but when I did use the bootstrap none of the models indicated
adequate fit to the data. I know that usually the bootstrap is used with
sparse data, however, I'm not sure whether I should use it or not in my
case.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback!!
Thanks!!

car/MANOVA question
Dear colleagues,
I had a question wrt the car package. How do I evaluate whether a
simpler multivariate regression model is adequate?
For instance, I do the following:
ami <- read.table(file =
"http://www.public.iastate.edu/~maitra/stat501/datasets/amitriptyline.dat",
col.names=c("TCAD", "drug", "gender", "antidepressant","PR", "dBP",
"QRS"))

AIC in lmer when using PQL
I am analysing binomial data using a generalised mixed effects model. I
understand that if I use glmmPQL it is not appropriate to compare AIC
values to obtain a minimum adequate model.
I am assuming that this means it is also inappropriate to use AIC values
from lmer since, when analysing binomial data, lmer also uses PQL
methods. However, I wasn't sure so please could somebody clarify this
for me.
I was also wondering how best to assess your minimum adequate...

Changing the Reply-To: option for the list
Hi all,
A few years ago, at popular request, I changed the default of the list
to have a Reply-To: pointing at the list. I personally find it very
annoying, and I would like to change the default back.
Would people object to trying it?

extlinux troubles....
...ge has no examples at all, and
'extlinux.txt' only has tiny, out-of-context snippets which assume the
hard disk you want to install upon is either hda or sda, and you know
that too. For a poster who insists on absolute perfection, I'm
shocked you find that paltry level of documentation adequate.

is there something like or() ?
hi, this may be trivial, but we can't seem to find anything adequate,
(although there is a work around with match() ). We are looking for something
along the lines of
plot(table1[table1$var2==or("a","b","c","d"),"var1"])
would be handy, with the potential or() function leading to what
