ts; decompose; plot and title
...n(2 * pi * (1:600) / 12) # transform to a monthy time series y <- ts(x, frequency=12, start=c(1950,1)) # decompose z <- decompose(y) # plot plot(z) Now, the title is the ugly "Decomposition of additive time series". How can do this with a decent title, like "Analysis of UFO abductions"? Alberto Monteiro

[OT] Re: p-values
...st Carl Sagan (in his wonderful book ``The Demon Haunted World'') referred to the ``dangerous doctrine'' that strength of belief has anything to do with the truth of a proposition. He was not writing in any statistical context. Rather, he was discussing the daffy notion of ``alien abductions'' which apparently has been taken seriously by some Ivy League psychologist on the basis that many of those who claim to have been abducted so fervently ***believe*** their own tales. (So they must be true!) However, the point still stands. cheers, Rolf Turner rolf at math....

DEV=eth0 tc qdisc del dev $DEV root tc qdisc add dev $DEV

constructing a dataframe from a database of newspaper articles
I am hoping for some assistance with formatting a large text file which consists of a series of individual records. Each record includes specific labels/field names (a sample of 1 record (one of the longest ones) is below - at end of post. What I want to do is reformat the data, so that each individual record becomes a row (some cells will have a lot of text). For example, the column

I''m in the process of locking down as much of my systems here as possible as to available ports. I am down to only a handful but am not sure how much of a security risk they pose and was wondering if anyone here might be able to comment, or suggest secure versions to run: 21/FTP (WU-ftpd v2.4.2 BETA 14) 22/SSH (1.22) 23/TELNET (Netkit 0.09) 25/SMTP (Sendmail

HOWTO unmaintained?
Hi, more than a month ago I proposed an addition to the HOWTO to address a certain packet classification problem/bug and how to fix it (see http://mailman.ds9a.nl/pipermail/lartc/2005q3/016728.html). I never received any reaction from the HOWTO maintainers, not even when addressing them directly (see mail below). Given that a month has gone by: Is the HOWTO currently unmaintained? Regards,
