Windows 98SE can't access Samba
Hello List, I just upgraded from openSUSE 10.3 to 11.1, had no problems with samba until the update (Samba Version should have been 3.0.?). After the update (Samba 3.2.4-5.2). Windows 98SE prompted for the password, saying it was wrong. Using smbclient id didn't have any problems. Tried around enabling/disabling password encryption on both sides, lanman auth, but no luck. So i upgraded to Samba 3.4.2-1.1 (suse buildservice, samba stable). Now Windows 98SE doesn't even fin...

98, 98se or Me
I've just started trying to use wine (with no success so far) on Mandrake 8.1. It is trying to use my WinMe setup which it detected when I installed Mandrake. Is there more chance of success if I use 98se than Me? Thanks. Zebidiah

Simple Samba
...changes. In the mean time I need to move and store my "My Documents" folder over to Linux (like an NT server.) So, when the day arrives that there will be NO MORE Windows in my home, I will still have my existing files. So, I need to get around that IPC$ password demand that Windows 98SE insists on receiving. My home system is as follows: Linux Server running RedHat 7.3 (Samba 2.2.3) and operating as a LTSP server with one work station attached. A stand alone firewall box (in the closet) that acts as my dial-on-demand internet access. A Windows 98SE computer that still has so...

Am I attempting the impossible?
...y Windows programs we'll need to run, everything else will be done with "native" applications. How well does Wine work in a terminal server environment? Will I need separate installs in each user's home directories, or will some clever symlinks save the day? How do native Windows 98SE DLLs like being accessed simultaneously? Am I nuts for even trying? Thanks for any help you can offer. ......jurgen -- thinger@gmail.com is jurgen's gmail address. Visit http://jurgen.ca/ for more yummy goodness.

We aspire for this box to be a fax server using Hylafax 4.1.2 and smbfax 1.4. Everything works fine for the Win98SE clients using the HP IIP PS Cartridge printer driver from the 'Add Printer' wizard from Windows...

syslinux.com: sector read error
Hello. I cannot install syslinux on my hard disk image. Steps to reproduce the problem: (1) Create a zeroed disk image with 800 tracks, 32 sides, and 63 sectors or 825753600 bytes (2) Fdisk and format it with "format.com /S C:" from windows 98SE boot disk. (3) Copy syslinux (tested version 3.11, 3.20, and latest released) to root. (4) Run "lock C:" and press "Y" (why is this necessary?) (5) Boot drive and run "syslinux c:" (6) Get "sector read error" I am using qemu 0.9.0. This works with disks...

Re: Win9x login script drive mapping problem - more info
Many thanks to those who have replied so far - still no luck unfortunately. It would appear that I was ni=ot quite specific enough in the original post re: the OS version I am using - it is Windows 98SE, NOT vanilla 98. As for the login script I am using, I tried originally with the NT/2K script I use for all the other machines (logical as they are all NT/2K!): #### Script starts here #### @echo OFF REM REM login scripts for computers logging into 'badger' REM c: echo Setting workstat...

Very poor writing performance
...business network (192.168.1.x). I am running Suse 7.2 on a pentium pro 120. This machine is also the local gateway (isdn) using masquarading. I have a 10 Mbs utp network. I am experiencing an extreme difference in read and write speed over the samba server. Writing from a windows machine (windows 98se) to the linux box gives me data rates of approx 16 kByte/sec, reading from the linux box to the windows machine is near 1 MByte/sec. Using smbclient on the linux box, the situation is as bad. Any ideas on how to fix this or how to do more elaborate tests? Thanks. R.Lagendijk -------------- n...

Problem booting from CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives using syslinux
I've run into a rather odd problem. It seems that I can format and make bootable CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives under Windows 98SE and MS-DOS 6.22 that will boot to a A: prompt on my system. But when I try making the same CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives bootable under linux using syslinux I get nothing, not even a error message. It's like the syslinux bootloader doesn't even exist on the CF/SD cards and USB Flashd...
