RoR on a VPS
I''m looking for a virtual private server to run a RoR site accessing a
database on a different machine.
This is a small application - basically a form to add records, and a few
summary screens.
What are the minimal requirements for a vps?
Thanks.

Stripe vs Cylinder alignement...
...ied to align the begining on the stripe and the end on the end of a cylinder, but sfdisk still compains...
Basicaly, I have a 128KB (256 sectors) stripe, and 255*32 = 8160 sectors cylinders.
What I am doing is:
begin = ( begin / 256 ) * 256
end = ( end / 8160 ) * 8160 -1
So, for my first partition (96MB):
begin=256
size = ( ( 96 * 1024 * 2 ) / 8160 ) * 8160 = 195840 sectors
end = 195840 - 1 - 256 = 195583
Any idea what I am doing wrong in my calculations or logic?
Thx,
JD

[PATCH] ocfs2: Limit default local alloc size within bitmap range.
...6b82021b9e91cd689fdffadbcdb9a42597bbe764, we increase
our local alloc size and calculate how much megabytes we can
get according to group size and volume size.
But we also need to check the maximum bits a local alloc block
bitmap can have. With a bs=512, cs=32K, local volume with 160G,
it calculate 96MB while the maximum local alloc size is only
76M. So the bitmap will overflow and corrupt the system truncate
log file. See bug

FLAC compression experiment
...le is still 100% original.
My tests are the following.
source file WAV. 1 hour 440HTZ tone. 600MB.
volume at 100. FLAC file size is 184MB.
volume at 75. FLAC file size is 166MB.
volume at 50. FLAC file size is 143MB.
volume at 25. FLAC file size is 109MB.
volume at 5. FLAC file size is 96MB.
From184MB to 96MB.
As you can see from the full 100 normalize volume to the 5 normalize volume it is half the file size.
So to put it. I think that you should have your compression of FLAC to also include a normalize volume shift to further compress the end product. Either have a default setti...

Ah, that's the problem; you have a used BASH shell.
Better go out and buy a new one (just kidding :-)

Mbuf Clusters on 4.8
...a bit now for problems with
running out of mbuf
clusters. Im basically sending a 30k datachunk down
1000-4000 connections,
but 1000 is more than enough to quickly fill upp 8192
mbuf clusters. I also
tried setting maximum amount of mbuf clusters to 65536,
but that only made
the box hard-wire 86MB of 96MB RAM, making it just as
unsuable as a dead

Of course, when the machine runs out of mbuf clusters,
it dies. I also found
this with google:
"Finally, the fact that FreeBSD 3.x panics when it runs

Asterisk + XEN does it make sense?
Hi List,
I was wondering if anybody had tried running Asterisk inside
virtualization software such as Xen. Are there known problems doing it?
Cheers,
Jean-Michel.

Performance problem with ACCESS MDB files
...ACCESS based on MDB database files. These applications were
previously running OK when using a NOVELL 3.12 server.
In order to reduce the amount of protocols on the network and other
benefits, we've decided to replace the NOVELL server with SAMBA 19.18p10
(RH 5.2) running on a PII-300Mhz with 96Mb of RAM.
We have noticed that Microsoft ACCESS applications are now running
faster if only one user is accessing the database, but as soon as
another user starts to access the same database file across the network
then the applications run 10 times slower and becomes nearly unusable.
If we temporary...

Serious stability issues
We have encountered a number of problems with our firewall recently,
and the past 24 hours have left me quite concerned. Here is what we are
seeing:
1. Original firewall, a PentiumPro/200 with 96Mb RAM, serving approx
500 client PCs for a 10Mb internet connection. Running Mandrake 9.2, we
began seeing severe swapping a few weeks, with kernel mem usage
exceeding 200Mb. Given an ip_conntrack value of 1000-2000 or so
during normal loads, the mem usage seemed excessive. Kernel 2.4.22-

...portable audio players and thought hmmm, if you can
get cd quality audio in a third of the memory, people
might use it for that. I mean imagine if you have one
of those little 16mb winCE things, not a lot of use
really but then if you had 3 times the space it would
be like 48mb and 32 would be like 96mb and it all
starts sounding a lot more useful.
Anyway I just thought it was interesting, probably it
sounds horrible :)

what hardware shuld I but to manage 100k of connections per day?
I''m doing a fotolog for a company.
It''s expected to manage about 100k of connections per day and about 1500
concurrents connections.
What hardware should I buy to manage those numbers of connections?
I''m planning to use slackware + lighttpd + fastcgi, but perhaps we will
have to reuse some scripts in php, in that case I would use slackware +
apache + mod_php + fastcgi

Firewall sizing guidelines?
I have just completed the installation of a new firewall running
Shorewall 1.4 on Mandrake 9.2 for our campus network. It appears to
be running fairly well so far, but is generating significantly more log
entries than our previous linux 2.0.x firewall...
Our previous firewall enjoyed more than 6 years of 24/7 operation with
no downtime before we finally decided it needed more horsepower, and

cpu power needed for shaping
Hello,
My company recently upgraded our internet connection and I need to set
up shaping. I was wondering , what are the CPU and RAM requirements for
shaping 768/768 DSL line ?
I have a few old P III''s (450 MHz, 256 RAM) and some VIA Eden (533 MHz,
512 RAM) boxes lying around. Which one would be most appropriate ?
That box would be a shaping only box, and all internet traffic would go
