Samba Server Not Browseable
Hello-
I am in the process of upgrading our NT 3.51 to NT 4.0
but have run into a problem:
We have Samba 1.9.14 running on a UnixWare 2.1 machine.
With the NT 3.51 machines the Samba Serveris not visible
in the Network Neightborhood, but it can be easily accessed
by specifying where one wants to connect.
NT 4.0 doesn't seem to have this option.
So, 1) can someone tell me HOW to make

netbios-ns address already in use?
I was just browsing through my logs and noticed this many times:
Dec 2 14:00:37 barney inetd[3021]: netbios-ns/udp: bind: Address already
in use
netbios-ns should run on port 137/udp right? This is the samba nmbd
server, right? When I do a ps -fe |grep nmbd I see this:
root 708 1 0.0 Nov 26 ?? 3:52.39 nmbd -n Alpha_1000
root 709 708 0.0 Nov 26 ??

SUMMARY: netbios-ns address already in use?
My original message follows...
Well, it would seem that my problem was that nmbd was somehow running as a
daemon. Looking at the process IDs the first nmbd had a parent process of
1, not as the ID of inetd. I don't know HOW that happened, the only place
nmbd is referenced is inetd.conf. I killed the main nmbd process, sent a
HUP signal to inetd, nmbd started again and I haven't had a

need mount version 6 ???
I just installed linux 2.1.85 on a Red Hat 5.0 box that was the 2.0.31
kernel. Now my smbfs is broken. When I try to access a share on another SMB
box, I get:
SMBFS: need mount version 6
smbmount returns "invalid parameter" error, IIRC.
I've gone cross-eyed staring at DejaNews today, trying to find a solution
to this, but so far only other people reporting the problem, and no one

password server problem
We are using samba with a NT4.0 Primary Domain Controller as a samba password
server.
Logon validation on the primary domain controller works fine, the NT machine
validates the user password.
BUT: On the NT PDC the event log shows numerous entries saying:
Unknown user or wrong password
Did anybody experience this too ????

Too many users for samba?
Hi,
I've been running a Linux machine (RedHat 4.1 kernel 2.0.27)
with Samba 1.9.16p9 (built by RedHat) for about 1 year now.
Everything has been working just fine, but recently I increased
the number of users. When I get to about 75 users the whole
system goes down, with messages like:
Unable to load interpreter
No more processes
File table overflow
If I manage to kill Samba, the system

Access Database SLOW
I've got a user that wants an Access database shared out. I've got a decent
machine serving out the directory (300 MHz Pentium II) running RedHat 5.0
(kernel 2.0.34) with Samba 1.9.17p4 (RPM is samba-1.9.17p4-3). I've created
a simple share entry in the smb.conf file:
[global]
debug level = 1
browsable = yes
comment = Samba under Linux (RedHat 5.0)

Server string in Network Neighbourhood
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the string that appears in browser lists restricted to being a single string without spaces, or can you include spaces ?
I have samba v1.9.15p8 running on a SGI O2 system, and I'm accessing its filesystems from a W95 PC.
I started off with the following line in my /etc/init.d/samba script
NMBD_OPTS="-C11th Floor SGI O2"

Changing file permissions from NT
We run a Network of Suns (running Samba) and PC-NT (version 4, sp3)
machines, at work, and find it very annoying to be unable to change the
file permissions of files from NT on the Suns. Is there any way to
change the permissions from NT file explorer or otherwise ?

How to write a printcap entry for remote printer
I am sharing some printers attached to Win95 boxes, and would like to be
able to do more than connect from Linux with smbclient and print via
translate. I would like to be able to specify a printcap entry for these
so as to be able to print from pine or lynx or Netscape (when I get X
running here at work).
I haven't found anything in Samba docs or LDP docs yet to tell me how to
write such

How about this option for nmbd?
Hi,
please imagine the following scenario:
We have 4 local samba networks consisting of multiple
samba machines and Win95 and NT machines as well. They
all talk to each other and all works well. We have one
central (samba) WINS server for all 4 nets. These
4 nets are connected together and communicate to
the outside world through a firewall.
Now I want to connect to exactly one share on the

1.9.16p11 and Windows 95 app conflicts
We installed Samba 1.9.16p11 on our Solaris 2.5 Sparc server here and we
are
having some difficulty getting Windows 95 programs to access the Samba
shares.
Many of the programs work, and we are dedicated to using Samba, and we have
a lot
of stuff out there, and we are using it effectively. But we have a few
problems with a
few programs.
One of the possible solutions to this problem is to upgrade

smbstatus show open files when none are
I recently (a few weeks ago) installed 1.9.18p8 in order
to get better performance with an Access Database, which along
with adding a TCP_NODELAY in the [global] section has that
working like a charm. Thing that's bugging me now is smbstatus.
When I run it I see open files listed when I know that they aren't.
The following output shows quite a few files open that aren't

Samba performance
Hi all.
I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a quick answer, and
didn't find anything on the net.
Has anyone done any benchmark comparisons of server speed from Win95
clients, accessing files on a Samba 1.9.17p1 server share, as compared to
an NT Server, running on the same server hardware? If so, how did Samba
1.9.17 measure up to the NT server?
I need an answer to this,
