Slow VC++ builds from Linux fileserver
....18p8 running on a Sun UltraSparc.
To give some concrete figures, building a AppWizard generated project under
NT4 takes 33 seconds when the project files sit on the UltraSparc and 165
seconds when they sit on Linux. When built under W95 (on a slower machine -
NT4 is 200 MHz PII w/ 128Mb, W95 is a 90MHz Pentium with 64Mb), the build
takes 54 secs when the project files sit on Linux or UltraSparc (and 64
seconds when the files are hosted on a NT server, for what it's worth).
Yep, a P90/W95 outperforms 200PII/NT4 by a factor of >2.

I don't know if icecast works under non-unix like systems, however
it doesn't consume much CPU resource it seems.

Porting Vorbis lib on Ti DSP ? How to ?
Hello All,
I would be very interested to have your ideas to port the vorbis lib ( part of
lib at least) on a DSP TMS320C5409 (running @ 90Mhz).
I have reviewed messages and URLs related to:
- 'ivdev' Integerized Vorbis Project
- Ogg-on-a-Chip Project
This is very interesting. In my case I think the best approach
would be , in order to shorten porting work & time,
to recompile the original library. Will it be really possible...

The shoutcast doc says:
If you want to broadcast to listeners, you'll need:
* 90Mhz or faster server, running one of Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME,
Mac OS X, Sparc Solaris 2.x, FreeBSD 3.x, FreeBSD 4.x, or Linux with
a libc6 kernel.
* 14kB of memory for every listener you want to broadcast to (i.e. 1,000
listeners means you need 14 Megabytes of RAM), plus whatever your

iRiver
Hi,
Does anyone (of the developers) know what's the status on the iRiver
Vorbis support? Mainly I'm interested in knowing if it will be a
firmware update or if they'll have to make a new player.
I'm thinking about buying the iMP-350, but I don't want to buy it now
only to discover that it will never support my favorite audio format.
TIA,
Alex

in a window on your VGA display, or unscaled via a NTSC video monitor.
The code and sample X window application are far enough along that people
could consider using the software to build into their applications.
The VGA window feature will only work with VGA clocks 90MHz or less and
your VGA card must have a working feature connector.
To get started you need

ftp://omt.com/pub/omt/tm-easy-utils-v1.05.tgz
If you want to play VideoCDs or CDI CDs you will need a Plextor 4plex
CDROM drive.

disappointed with group
Hi all,
must say I have found the help in this group very disapointing. Have
mail numerous times for help with some (in hindsight) simple problems.
yet no one (ok 1 person) has attempted to aid me.
If this group was ONLY filled with novices and users I could accept this
but I have seen members of the development team , and others who have
insight into the workings of icecast comment on other

naive question
I have a 100Mb comma-separated file, and R takes several minutes to read it
(via read.table()). This is R 1.9.0 on a linux box with a couple gigabytes of
RAM. I am conjecturing that R is gc-ing, so maybe there is some command-line
arg I can give it to convince it that I have a lot of space, or?!
Thanks!

Planning Mail Server (with low resources)
Hello,
I'm planning the installation of the school's Mail Server. This is the
first time I get in administration. I've been reading about postfix,
cyrus and the first page in the guide of HughesJR.com[2] about
installing postfix-cyrus, but due my low hardware resources, I ask for
suggestions to see If what I need can be done (and|or) stable.
