Use 8GB RAM on Pentium D?
Hello:
I have a Supermicro SuperServer 5015P-TR.
It has a Pentium D and is running CentOS x86_64.
Can this machine use 8GB RAM?
I think it should because it is running a 64 bit
OS, but I am concerned because it is fundamentally
32 bit hardware.
Anyone have any experience in this area?
Thanks,
Neil

athlon64/opteron 8GB per CPU
...f hardware that folks
are using in production environments, preferably with CentOS 4, with more than
4GB of memory per CPU.
I know there are lots of mobos out there that can do this, but I'm looking for
what folks really have running. Call me paranoid.
The target is SATA + n*GigE + 1CPU + 8GB memory, and I can consider other
configurations. The incumbent system is a Xeon 8GB system running i686 CentOS
4.3 (what else?), with light CPU loading and very heavy IO loading (WD raptors
are our friends).
Folks with deep(er) knowledge of x86_64 architecture, I'd also be interested

Xen on 32bit machine with 8GB of RAM
I wanted to install Xen on 32bit processor with 8GB RAM. I am running Debian
on it.
The general Kernel can only address ~4GB of RAM. So, Is it necessary to
install BigMEM kernel so that all the memory get addressed? And then
install xen kernel.
Or ?? Suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
gorkhe

Handling 8GB .txt file in R?
Hi,
I am mediocre at R, maybe 1000 hours experience, but I received an 8GB
dataset and I don't know what to do with it. I have to do extensive analysis
over it for my Honours thesis.
I can't even import it. I've tried;
- Splitting it up using the free csv-splitter-1.1.zip that seems to be
working for everyone else (it doesn't work for me, it just outputs...

Trouble (?) reformatting flash drive to include former U3 partition
Semi-OT?
I just got a new SanDisk 8GB flash drive, and, as usual, it came with
the U3 software (for Windoze) on a "CD" partition and considerably
less than 8GB on the disk partition. I put it into my WinXP portable
and told U3 to delete itself, but I still can't get at the old U3 part
of the drive. I've tried WinXP&...

Replacing Devices in a Storage Pool
Hi,
Assume that you have a 2-way mirror of small drives that you want to replace with another 2-way mirror of larger drives. What is the best way to do this?
If you use the zpool replace command, one at a time on each of the existing old drives, then you will end up wasting the additional space on the new drives. I have tried to access this space by creating a new pool and adding the unused

host freeze when starting VM
Hi together,
when I´m starting a VM my host freezes gradually. This seems to happen
because its running out of memory and no other process is able to do
anything.
I have 16GB of ram in total. 8GB are reserved for hugepages. So for the
daily business on the host I have 8GB left. I don´t run many or
extraordinary consuming software on the host - normally just a gnome
session and the chromium browser. Right now htop tells me that 10.1 of 15.4
GB are occupied, so that should be about 2GB, becau...

lvm and kvm
...om the main vg or does one allocate lv space from inside
that allocated to the virtual instance? Is it even considered
advisable to use lvs with virtual guests?
To give an example, if I were to configure an smtp server on bare
metal I might use the following disk layout:
vg_bare 500Gb
/ lv_root 8Gb
/boot lv_boot 1Gb
/tmp lv_tmp 8Gb
/var/log lv_log 8Gb
/var/spool/mail lv_mail 16Gb
In a kvm setup, if I wish to do this, would I first create an lv
just to host the virtual image and then assign lv s from the space
allocated to that image file?
vg_bare 500Gb
/ lv_root 8Gb
/boot lv_boot 1Gb

2.6.18-92.1.6.el5xen -- 8GB missing?
Hello,
Last night I upgraded a server to CentOS 5.2. The server has 16GB of
RAM. Now that it's running 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5xen only 8GB is reported to

1333/8GB Intel motherboard for C5.1
Hi there, has anyone run into any Desktop/Workstation Intel brand motherboards that work with CentOS 5.1 (4.6/3.9 out of box compatibility is a very large plus) and work with the 1333MHZ cpus such as the 8400/9450 and accept 8GB of RAM? The closest we've found so far is the DG31PR which is alright but it has the limitation of 4GB of RAM and an unsupported Realtek NIC. The DQ35JO is also ok, but requires quite a bit of 'jostling' to get to work such as pci=nommconf and other tweaks, we need something that will w...

Expanding a root pool
I''m attempting to expand a root pool for a VMware VM that is on an 8GB virtual disk. I mirrored it to a 20GB disk and detached the 8GB disk. I did "installgrub" to install grub onto the second virtual disk, but I get a kernel panic when booting. Is there an extra step I need to perform to get this working?
Basically I did this:

Windows Laptop specification query
...allelization needs to be implemented using snow/rmpi. Are the answers
still the same?
I ask because we are about to order a laptop running Windows for a new
staff member. Some advice on the following would be helpful.
It will be ordered with Vista, with a free upgrade to Windows 7. It will
have 8GB of memory
A quad core CPU costs about AUD$1100 more than the fastest (Intel
T9900-6M Cache, 3.06 GHz) dual core CPU.
I'm wondering if there is value in ordering the quad core. We are
looking at a time frame of 3-4 years.
Is anyone aware of near future plans to implement some form or

Asterisk stops responding
...16:30:47] WARNING[20745] chan_dahdi.c: Unable to start PBX on DAHDI/29-1
After restarting Asterisk everything is back to normal. The time between
the first failure and the second was almost a month, between the second and
third a few days.
We use CentOS 5.5 on a Dell 905 server with 8gb of ram. The first time
it happened we were using Asterisk 1.6.2.14 so we upgraded to 1.6.2.15 to try
and avoid the problem but no luck. Any recommendations?

Maybe I am not clear enough.
I mean if we inflate balloon before live migration, for a 8GB guest, it takes about 5 Seconds for the inflating operation to finish.
For the PV solution, there is no need to inflate balloon before live migration, the only cost is to traversing the free_list to
construct the free pages bitmap, and it takes about 20ms for a 8GB idle guest( less if there is le...

RAM security
Hi Everyone,
In Xen, is a DomU able to access data in RAM which a previous DomU has stored in the past, but didn''t "zero" it?
I understand that this is a problem with physical disks (using phy:/), just wondering if the same stands with RAM
Thanks

also, try and scrounge another DDR2 SODIMM for that thing, according to
my google search, it supports up to 2 x 4GB == 8GB, and you said you
only have the stock 2GB. 4GB will be way better performance with a
GUI, 8GB would be even better. you still have a really slow CPU and if
its still got the original 5400RPM HD, a really slow HD, but don't make
it triple-suffer from not enough ram. (a SSD replacing the...
