VNC 'fix' for 256 colour game only shows 2 colours?
I'm trying to run an old (~1995) Windows game under Wine, but it requires 256 colours and won't work any higher. I've checked out the 256 colour hacks page and the X methods don't work, because I use the FGLRX drivers and they don't support 8bpp, so I'm trying VNC.
I've installed vnc-server and vnc so I can play it through a 256 colour VNC connection, but so far I can get the game to run but only in two colours. Other apps I start in VNC (e.g. Eye of Gnome) do show in 256 colours, it's just the 256 colour game that shows in 2...

Looks like it's using 8bpp (0x1e00) in 32MB case but 16bpp (0xe800) in 64MB
case. Why?
I get blank screen even with 64MB with video=1280x1024-8 kernel parameter.
Console works with video=1280x1024-16 even with 32MB stolen memory.
Conclusions: 8-bit support is broken and bpp reduction is weird.

Resolutions and bits per pixel.
Greetings Gentlefolk,
It's a long time since I 'cvs updated' my wine sources. I
did that last night, and after rebuilding I was left with
three questions.
My experience was that to run an 8-bit windoze app, I
had to run wine under an X server that was running in
8bpp. This time, I forgot to switch to an 8-bit X, and to
my amazement, the app came up under 16 bpp. Way
Cool!
q1) An 8 bpp app running on a 16 bpp X server will be
slower than an 8 bpp app running on an 8 bpp X server,
right?
My 16 bpp X server runs at 1600x1200, but I have a
dozen other resolutio...

Anyway, between now and then I've reinstalled and updated drivers, etc and
I can't get wine to work for the life of me (Recent version too)
When I had it working I was using a script to start a second X server in
640x480x8bpp, spawn an xterm and ultimately starcraft. It worked great.
I'm trying the same thing now, but all I can get is starcraft to load with
a mostly black screen and a few white pixels where the menu animations
are. Sound and mouse seem fine. The absolute best I could do was by
turning on the ins...

no dicernable change in this.... yeah 4 hours was a lot longer than I
think is a useful time to wait but I got distracted. I've tried
changing my colour depth to 8bpp but that didn't seem to make any
difference, anyone got any clue what it could be think so hard about,
other than how much it (like all technology) my do it's best to thwart

NetStorm text color problem
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1984
I think this deserves some attention.
NetStorm tries to switch from 32bpp to 8bpp, but can't, even though X
does have 8bpp configured.

Call for comments: OggUVS
...eora supports. For my immediate purposes, I
don't have any information about what the actual colorspace used at my
frame source is, so the "unspecified" variants I declared will have to
suffice.
It's not meant to support every conceivable format (notably it doesn't
do >8bpp) but it should support lots of common/popular formats easily,
and is extendable to scratch someone else's itch.
Thanks in advance,
John Koleszar

[NV50] application to confirm texture layout
Here is an app to test the texture layout.
No message means it's ok. Otherwise it spews a lot of errors.
You have to manually set the TILE_HEIGHT, TILE_WIDTH and TILING_PARAM.
TILE_WIDTH == TILE_PITCH in this case because it's 8bpp data.
Use this list (TILING_PARAM) TILE_WIDTHxTILE_HEIGHT:
(0x00) 32x4
(0x10) 64x8
(0x20) 64x16
(0x30) 64x32
(0x40) 64x64
I'm curious to know if anyone has different layouts.
You may need to sudo run it.
Maarten.
