installing on 915GAVL motherboard kernel bombs and/or X bombs
I got a new box today. 915GAVL motherboard. Celeron 2.4G 1 GIG mem 80GIG SATA drive. When I boot centos I have had various stages of success. Once I got as far as partitioning the disk manually and X blew and the machine rebooted. Couple times I have had kernel crashes at different stages of install. I have not has trouble installing before and was wondering if there...

[OT] Rails hosting question -- video centric
This is OT in the sense that it''s yet another hosting question and not strictly a problem I''m having with Rails. Basically, I trust and appreciate the knowledge of the folks on this list so I''m hoping for some insight. I have a new project that I''ll be starting up soon. It''s basically going to feed videos. The webapp piece is trivial. I''m

hdparm strangeness
I've got a brand new .5U P4 system running several (I think) Seagate 80gig SATA drives. I tried to copy data from the first drive (sda) to the second drive (sdc) and was only getting about 1.7megs/sec. So I figured DMA was off. And this is what happened when I typed "hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc": /dev/hdc: setting using_dma to 1 (on) HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operat...

ext3 and highpoint RAID.
oops. I successfully installed RedHat 8.0 onto two ATA133 80gig drives running a mirrored RAID with the hpt37x (highpoint 372 onboard RaidController on the SOYO DRAGON motherboard.) I used ext3 as my filesystem type of choice but unfortunately the system shut down uncleanly and it now is coming up with the "press Y to force file system integrity check&quo...

Question on failing hard drive part 2
OK, I've figured out which drive is bad. Before I go any further let me give a brief HD configuration explanation. The primary IDE has a 80gig(Master) HD, and an internal zip drive(Slave) connected to it. The two 200gig Hard Drives are connect to a PCI ATA controller card(Not a promise card), one is master, the other one is slave. It is the slave 200gig drive that is going bad. Now, I have a feeling this would be too easy. When I se...

Measuring hosting performance: shared <--> vps <--> dedicated
Every app we build has to be deployed, and the price has to be right. * dedicated servers start at 99$/m (Dreamhost, ..), and shared hosting go up to 47$/m (PlanetArgon) or 60$/m (TextDrive) * Railsplayground: 2$/m * TextDrive dedicated servers : 1000$/m Is there an objective way/tool to measure, test and compare the performance of the hosters? Asterisk & MySQL Blobs
Hello Folks, Has anyone had production experience using * w/ MySQL Blobs to store sound files? The application I am working on requires all user data resides in a database. I am currently reading/writing the files to disk via a phpagi scripts but I would love to read the blob into a variable in the dial plan, etc. It seems like a waste of resources to write and delete the file.

Dedicated Host Recommendations?
I currently have a dedicated server at ev1servers, but it''s getting rather antiquated (Redhat 9) and am looking to upgrade. I''m thinking about serverbeach.com - one of their CentOS servers. Anybody have any recommendations for dedicated servers on which to run Rails? Hopefully less than $200/month. Thanks! CSN __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?

vsftpd resource hogging on 4.2
I've just noticed an odd bit of behaviour with 4.2. I'm using FTP to send a number of large binary files from a windows 2000 machine to a CentOS 4.2 system. Both systems are similarly configured (Athlon64 3200+, 1gig RAM, 80gig system disk, 1.2TB scratch RAID 0 array, gigabit ether to a dumb switch on which they are the only hosts). On the very first file, about 17.5gigs, I got about 30MB/sec. Not spectacular, but reasonably fast. On subsequent files, I only get about 25% of that throughput and vsftpd on the CentOS...

CentOS 5 dual boot with XP success
Hello. A happy, error-free report about my experiences last night. Only one small inconvenience in the install. I have an AMD Athlon64 3700+ in a MSI Neo2-F motherboard (Via K8T800 Pro chipset), with a WD Raptor SATA drive and an older WD 80gig IDE drive. The system has 1 gig of RAM and a CDROM (not DVD). The on-board network is a Realtek 8169/8110 chip. My video is a 6800GT (AGP). The BIOS instructs the machine to boot off the SATA drive first, which is partitioned completely to a recent install of Win XP SP2. Using CentOS 5 CDs, I b...

Rails VPS Business Hosting
Greetings, Does anyone have experience with Rails VPS hosting? I''m basically looking for a hosting reseller option so I can have control of my clients domains and hosting. I''m looking for something easy to use; although I like learning it all, and am learning a lot, I am most definitely not a command line linux user type as of yet. The one that I''ve looked at

OT: Good virtual server host with debian?
Hey all, I''m casually shopping around for a host that will give me a virtual server running Debian. It would host some of my rails projects and probably some svn. Does anyone know of a good host? Anecdotes about satisfaction would be nice. Thanks, Bryan -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

X-Lite Softphone
Hey Everyone, I downloaded and installed the X-Lite softphone the other day (the lite version) and cannot seem to get it to work well. Don't get me wrong, it registers with my asterisk server and everything seems to work well, except the call quality really is horrible. I thought it may be the place I was trying it at (DSL) so I took it to the office and tried it right next to the asterisk

Serial ATA hardware raid.
Hi everyone, I'm looking into setting up a SATA hardware raid, probably 5 to use with CentOS 4. I chose hardware raid over software mostly because I like the fact that the raid is transparent to the OS. Does anyone know of any SATA controllers that are well tested for this sort of usage? From what I can tell from googling, this is more or less where RHEL stands: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
