Bandwidth limited when shorewall is enabled
Hi, I''ve been having a really strange thing happen. I can''t remember when it happened, or if it coincided with a shorewall update, but if I have shorewall "running", my 100mbps connection is limited to about 1-6mbps per connection. This is with TC/Shaping/QoS disabled or enabled. I have no idea if its shorewall doing something funky or ipables or what, but if I stop shorewall, I can download from a vps I have at upwards of 10MB/s or more. With shorewall started, I get 300KBps max. That said, it seems to b...

ksoftirqd_CPU0 extreme CPU usage
Hi all, I dont know if this problem is related to shorewall, but as here we have a lot of firewall experts ... :) We are using a Leaf box (1GHz 256MB RAM) for a network with normal traffic of about 6Mbps but peaks of up to 40Mbps. The chipset of the ethernets is a Realtek. We are experiencing some high latency high CPU usage issues (the CPU is at 90%) and we discovered the process ksoftirqd_CPU0 could consume up to 50% of that. We are using a 2.4.26 kernel and have NOT compiled any optimizati...

Request for guidance
...a rack (14U space) in a top notch data center. I''ll be racking a layer 2 managed switch (a Dell PowerConnect 5224), four of my own servers (1U Opteron servers, single socket, dual core, dual NIC), as well 2 servers for 2 friends who will be subleasing from me. The package includes 6Mbps of bandwidth, burstable to 100Mbps. Bandwidth is tracked with 5-min samples, and as long as my 95th percentile is less than 6Mbps each month, there is no extra charge for bandwidth. I would like to use tc bandwidth shaping so that I can 1) ensure that I never have to pay for extra bandwidth...

slow rsync connection establish
I am running the rsync server on a windows xp machine on my local network. It is taking about 10-15 secs for me to get a connection with the rsync server. Once the connection is established, i am getting transfer speeds of 5-6MBps which is great. For every connection i see: name lookup failed for 192.168.0.76: Unknown server error [3820] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.0.76) I wonder if there is a way to disable the name lookup? My conf file looks like: use chroot = false strict modes = false hosts allow = * log file = c:/r...

A and B have immovability bandwith
hi,Stef: I read your burst test,I have some questions remain. A and B have immovability bandwith: If I bound bandwith to machine A and B,in order to it have 4Mbps,the other machine B have 6Mbps,(I have 10Mbps total). between them no permit bend from each other. whether burst cburst tokens ctokens value is zero. it''s right? --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? File Descriptors
I installed Squid on CentOS 4.4 and currently it seems to run fine even under the relatively heavy load of 6mbps and hundreds of users. I was told I should increase the file descriptor limit which I beleive is 1024 now. Any easy way to do that? Matt

I/O descriptor ring size bottleneck?
...1000RTTs) from inside a VM on one box talking to the netserver on the VM on the other box, I get a per flow throughput of around ~2.5Mbps (which sucks, but lets ignore the absolute value for the moment). If I run the same test, but this time from inside dom0, I get a per flow throughput of around 6Mbps. I''m trying to understand the difference in performance. It seems to me that the I/O descriptor ring sizes are hard coded to 256 -- could that be a bottleneck here? If not, have people experience similar problems? relaying streams
...39;re part of a LUG (Linux User Group) based at the University of Orleans in France. We have several dedicated servers for our foundation (we made the LUG a foundation, for administrative and papers...) We are able to relay some video or audio streams. We have, for the mooment 3 servers, with both 6Mbps (yes it's not huge, but it's better than nothing :-) ) The condition on the stream we will relay is very simple: vorbis "format" only (speex, ogg, theora), and legal content (no porn video and shits like that...) We'll relay for free, and as long as our foundation is "a...

Samba 3 performance issue
...e to data centre is about 10ms to 15ms. Some of the samba clients try to play some mpeg 4 movies directly from samba server, but the movie can not be played smooth. The mpeg 4 movie is about 2 to 4M bit rate. Then I tested the transfer rate from data centre to office by using samba, it is about 6Mbps only. But if I use FTP, it can up to 40M. That means the samba protocol cannot utilize the available bandwidth. Samba clients are Windows XP, Linux Fedora 3, ucLinux, etc. I have already tuned the Samba with following parameters, but no improvement at all. Anyone know any issue about samba over...

Multiple uplinks through single ethernet
...uter. At the moment this router only has one ethernet port for both of the ADSL connections (and another ethernet port for the local network) so this is my biggest concern. The example in the HOWTO assumes a separate ethernet port for each uplink. Here''s the intended setup: ADSL 1 = 6mbps/768kbps, several static IPs on 66.92.128.0/24 (gw = .1) ADSL 2 = 6mpbs/768kbps, several static IPs on 69.17.22.0/24 (gw = .1) LOCAL NET ROUTER INTERNET ----------------- 192.168.A.0/24 ----| <-NAT-> |---- ADSL 1 |ETH0...

QoS in wireless networks
Hello, I''m trying to configure several wireless routers with QoS support. The idea is to implement differentiated services so that VoIP traffic gets the maximal priority, then video, control traffic, interactive data traffic and best-effort traffic. I have seen that CBQ used to be chosen as qdisc for implementing bandwith share in DiffServ but now HTB is preferred because it is

Don't forget to use torrents for your downloads!
For those who may forget, usin torrents to download and share the new images will get you faster downloads (if enough folks participate) if you have a "fat" pipe and alleviate the load on the CentOS servers. I have a "chubby" pipe (~ 1.2MB/sec) and got the stuff really quickly earlier today. If your torrent has distributed hash table capability, I suggest that you also use

Keeping data on 2 servers in sync !
I want to build 2 servers (both running samba) to provide file storage to 2 offices (approx 100 miles apart, linked via DSL) but all data writen to 1 server must also be saved to the other server. Both servers would also allow users to access the data via a VPN thus allowing 1 office with a failed server to access the other server via the vpn and still see the data from both offices. I currently

traffic shaping and classes
I''m looking over this traffic shaping available in the tc* files. I went through this when I did my own traffic shaping outside of shorewall previously. For the average (i.e. home, perhaps) user, I''ve never understood why we use these more complicated shaping algorithms that define classes and guaranteed minimums and maximums and so forth. For most home, or other small use
