rsync transfer slow over network
...to a SAN via 10Gbe fiber network. Being thunderbolt model macs with no PCI slots we are using external boxes (Sonnet, ATTO) to interface between the thunderbolt and fiber connections. When using rsync -avvPhi we get speeds of approx 110MB/s but with a simple drag-and-drop we get speeds of approx 620MB/s. BIG difference. We get the same speeds (roughly) whether we connect afp or smb. Anyone have any suggestions for what to do to make the rsync transfer faster? These are local transfers with the SAN showing up as a shared drive on the desktop. Thanks! -------------- next part --------------...

increasing memory
Hi. I want to use R with very large files, a couple hundred megabytes, but R crashes every time that I try. Reading help files seems to indicate that R ought to manage its memory itself. I know I have enough memory since stata handles these files perfectly well. I have a mac running OS 10.3 and am running RAqua 1.8.1. Is there anything I can do to make it deal with these files successfully?

Problems with rsync 2.5.1pre1 and hardlinks
...and 400MB Swap on the main server and 128MB Swap on the backup server (I know this is stupid but at the moment I can't help it) What happens? The synchronization starts and gobbles up approx. 300MB of RAM/Swap by calculating the file list at the server. At the client system, approx. 620MB (aka. nearly all) memory is allocated to compare the file list (the sync is set up with -auvH). The files are transfered - when running it the 1st time, all files are transfered of course - and the transfer stops at the client after an hour with rsync.c:sig_int() called. rsync error: receiv...

Supporting ~10K users on ZFS
OK, I know that there''s been some discussion on this before, but I''m not sure that any specific advice came out of it. What would the advice be for supporting a largish number of users (10,000 say) on a system that supports ZFS? We currently use vxfs and assign a user quota, and backups are done via Legato Networker. >From what little I currently understand, the general
