Adding Nested Partitions To A Mount Point
...e treated as an
extention of the original disk, under Samba. This would mean that the
capacity of the second drive would be pooled with the first drive, on
which it is mounted.
For example:
I have a 200GB hard drive mounted to the directory "/pub". I would like
to add an additional 60GB drive to this. Can I create a directory on
the 200GB drive called "/pub/temp" and mount the 60GB drive to that
mount point? Then be able to have Samba consider the whole mess as a
single 260GB drive?
I have already tried this (with my limited knowledge) and all that seems
to happen...

OT Question about raid 5
Hi List
I am hoping that someone here could perhaps give me a straight answer
on a question that someone asked me today
I have always belived that if you have 5 hard drives 1 50gb second
50gb third 20gb fourth 60gb firth 30gb that the largest would then be
the size of the smallest disk, not 80 or 100 or 120 for that matter or
am I wrong here?
Regards?

Samba Very Slow When Using AFS and MS Office (is this a Bug?)
...t is essentially a RH 7.3 on
a 1.4GHz Athon with 1GB or RAM. I compiled Samba 2.2.5 in /opt/samba-2.2.5
and am using the following smb.conf:

workgroup = FLASH1
interfaces = vmnet1
bind interfaces only = yes
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m

What I am trying to do is to have Samba bind only to the internal network
device so that no one can look @ my samba share from the outside network.

Reducing RAM usage using UKSM
Greetings,
We've a fairly large dataset (around 60GB) to be loaded and crunched in
real time. The kind of data operations that will be performed on this data
are simple read only aggregates after filtering the data.table instance
based on the parameters that will passed in real time. We need to have more
than one instance of such R process running to...

Testing memory limits in R??
...t OS and I have compiled R from source with the following config
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/R-2.9.1 --enable-Rshlib
--enable-BLAS-shlib --enable-shared --with-readline --with-iconv
--with-x --with-tcktk --with-aqua --with-libpng --with-jpeglib
and I would like to verify that I can use 55GB-60GB of the 64GB of
memory within R. Does anyone know how this is possible? Will R be able
to access that amount of memory from a single process? I am not an R
user myself but I just wanted to test this before I turned the server
over to the researchers..
Thanks!

could get peak I/O of 452 MBytes/sec, and a sustainable I/O rate of over

tests were done using dbench and RAID5.
Let's get that right:

Large hard disk support in FreeBSD
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi,
I'd like to put a 60GB hard disk into Gateway 2000 Pentium 150 (from '96 or
'97 or so I think) running FreeBSD 4.8 RELEASE.
Can anybody tell me how successful this is likely to be? Will I be able to use
the full capacity of the drive?
I seem to recall that the trick with large hard disks and old BIOSes is to...

[LLVMdev] LTO question
...raph shows issues with debug info memory use. LLVM goes up to
35GB. LLVM developers are also working on debug info merging
improvements (equivalent to what GCC's type merging is) and the
situation has improved in last two releases until the current shape.
Older LLVM checkouts happily run out of 60GB memory & 60GB swap on my
machine.".

We will share the details as soon as we can -- possibly some time in Jan

Large database help
Hello all.
I have a large .txt file whose variables are fixed-columns,
ie, variable V1 goes from columns 1 to 7, V2 from 8 to 23 etc.
This is a 60GB file with 90 variables and 60 million observations.
I'm working with a Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, Windows XP Pro.
I tried the following code just to see if I could work with 2 variables
but it seems not possible:

Large-scale ACL copying?
Hi all,
Well, I'm getting somewhere I think, I now have both ACL support and
domain login basically working. However I'm at a bit of a loss as to how
to proceed.
Basically I want to copy over a large number of files and directories
(~300k files, ~60Gb total) from an existing W2k server to a Samba
server. These files have existing ACLs set, so I need to preserve them
somehow.
I can of course copy over the files themselves using any number of
methods "from" either machine, but the majority of them don't have any
knowledge of ACL...

Hardware decisions
I have a very small Samba4 system that supports my W7 clients. So small,
in fact, that I have only one DC (right now.) My DC is a 32-bit Pentium4
processor (512Mb RAM, 60Gb hdd), small form factor case, I got lucky and
found for cheap$$. My member server is a Intel DuoCore PC with RAID 1

machine is a seperate (does only backup) QuadCore, 2Gb RAM, with OS on
60Gb hdd and two 1Tb hdd's that store th...

rsync feature request: conditional compression
...urces. As
long as CPU's are fast and networks are slow, rsync with compression
does a great job. However, if I run rsync on a slow box (166MHz Ultra SPARC) over a fast network
(100Mb/s), the compression kills the transfer rate. I turned compression off and I should be done
rsyncing my files (60GB) overnight.
I would like to request a feature I call "conditional compression". What this would do would check
the network buffer, and if it is mostly full, then rsync knows that the network is slow and it will
compress data. If the network buffer is mostly empty, then rsync knows that...

drive size limit for syslinux
...king on making a 40gb laptop ide drive bootable via syslinux
as the drive is in an external hd enclosure.
syslinux installed on a 100 mb bootable fat32 partition and when I
tried to boot from the drive, I got a syslinux prompt which was
correct as I had not done a config file yet.
I later found a 60GB laptop ide drive and put the larger drive in the
enclosure and tried to install syslinux on that, using the same 100mb
fat32 boot partition.
This time no joy.
I get an error indicating that no OS can be found.
I triple checked and followed the exact same procedure in both cases,
so I'm lost...

quota recalc problem for big maildirs
...quota recalc. However for users with big
maildirs, receiving email every couple of seconds, there are tens of
delivery processes each doing its own recalc (as they open file for
APPEND and there's no locking). What's even worse, after all the stats
and getdents (it takes a lot of IO for 60GB account with 2M emails),
deliver makes stat on 'new' dir and detects changes after which it
unlinks freshly created maildirsize. So possibly this will never be
finished as every process drops its own work.
The same thing happened when we checked the native dovecot LMTP server
(every co...
