going past restrictions on number of elements
Hello R experts, I'm trying to test R in a shared memory environment in which addressable memory is aggregrated to about 600G. However, I get an error of 'too many elements' specified when I try creating a 45K x 100K matrix. I tried running R with a --max-nsize=50000000000 option, but got the same message. Is there a way to run create such large matrices? thanks, Paul Rodriguez

disk I/O problems and Solutions
...rther. But we've suspected a disk issue for some time - just have not been able to prove it. Our system IBM 3650 - quad 2Ghz e5405 Xeon 8K SAS RAID Controller 6 x 300G 15K/RPM SAS Drives /dev/sda - 2 drives configured as a RAID 1 for 300G for the OS /dev/sdb - 3 drives configured as RAID5 for 600G for the DB 1 drive as a global hot spare /dev/sdb is the one that is maxing out. We need to have a very serious look at fixing this situation. But we don't have the money to be experimenting with solutions that won't solve our problem. And our budget is fairly limited. Is there a publ...

Does refreservation sit on top of usedbydataset?
...p bar zsan0/fs/bar-001 at zfs-auto-snap:zsan03_1day_keep60days-2009-10-30-16:08_____ 0___-_ 280G_- My concern is USED property: it''s 680 for zsan0/fs/bar-001 (400 refreservation + 280 usedbydataset) When I set up reservation I wanted guaranteed space from pool be available to the volume (600G) which is the same as volume size itself. But now the volume data consumed space on top of that (referenced or usedbydataset). Confusing... Can somebody advise how to setup reservation properly? I want each volume to have guaranteed space for data plus something reserved on top of that for volum...

...y http://www.christmann.info/products/show/65 As they say on their site - don't search for images on google using that term! They also had a 64-port 1U 10Gbe switch: that's a lot of ports in 1U! They had it set up with a 3U server containing three dual 8-core motherboards and an array of 64 600G SAS SSDs, plus a couple of PB of HD storage. I think the price for the whole (half-rack) stack was about ?200,000! I couldn't tell you if that's good value or not! These are just random observations, I've nothing to do with either company! Matrix scalar operation that saves memory?
The example given does not leave room for even a single copy of your matrix so, yes, you need alternatives. Your example was fairly trivial as all you wanted to do is subtract each value from 100 and replace it. Obviously something like squaring a matrix has no trivial way to do without multiple copies out there that won't fit. One technique that might work is a nested loop that changes one

Max Icecast Listeners
I am curious if anyone has had enough experience to know --> how many simultaneous listeners can be supported by typical server boxes, assuming unlimited bandwidth is available? My specific case: My server (http://www.AirProgressive.org) is on a Linux VPS server located in a datacenter and on a optical backbone so that bandwidth is not the problem. Each connection I am running is at 32kbps

XEN/bridge mode
Hi! I want to forward the port 3389 from the domU to the virtual server with ip address 192.168.122.77 with not success... I tried a lot of iptables rules with no luck so far. Is this possible? I take a look at other post and I don''t found an answer. By example: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i xenbr0 --dport 3389 -j DNAT --to 192.168.122.77:3389 the virtual nic for the
