Advice on setting up Raid and LVM
Hi all, I'm setting up Centos4.2 on 2x80GB SATA drives. The partition scheme is like this: /boot = 300MB / = 9.2GB /home = 70GB swap = 500MB The RAID is RAID 1. md0 = 300MB = /boot md1 = 9.2GB = LVM md2 = 70GB = LVM md3 = 500MB = LVM Now, the confusing part is: 1. When creating VolGroup00, should I include all PV (md1, md2, md3)? Then create the LV. 2. When setting up RAID 1, should I make those separated partitions for /, /home, a...

trash can feature, crashed???
All, I currently have 2 bricks running Gluster 3.10.1. This is a Centos installation. On Friday last week, I enabled the trashcan feature on one of my volumes: gluster volume set date01 features.trash on I also limited the max file size to 500MB: gluster volume set data01 features.trash-max-filesize 500MB 3 hours after that I enabled this, this specific gluster volume went down: [2017-06-16 16:08:14.410905] I [MSGID: 106132] [glusterd-proc-mgmt.c:83:glusterd_proc_stop] 0-management: quotad already stopped [2017-06-16 16:08:14.412027] I...

Smallest install?
I have a 500Mb ATA Flash drive in my machine. If I deselect everything at install time (CentOS 5.0 - just for testing) it still requires 524Mb. Is there any way of doing an even smaller install? -- rgds Stephen

Rsync write behaviour / efficiency
Rsync is efficient at transferring diffs across the wire, but how efficient is it at updating the remote file itself (in terms of disk operations)? If, for example, you have a 500MB file (say an ISO) whose modification consists solely of a few bytes added on to the beginning of the file. Will it create an entirely new 500MB file? Or will it somehow know how to insert the bytes at the beginning of the remote file? If it is capable of the latter, how does it do it in terms of...

CentOS 7 install software Raid on large drives error
...the rest of the disk. Resulting in two separate Raid1s; a small Raid1 for /boot and a much larger Raid1 for the LVM volume group. I finally manually setup a base partition structure using GParted that allowed the install to complete using the format below. sda (3TB) sda1 /boot fat32 500MB sda2 /boot/efi fat32 500MB sdb (3TB) sdb1 /boot fat32 500MB sdb2 /boot/efi fat32 500MB The remaining space was left unpartitioned in GParted, which was then prepared as LVM Raid1 in the CentOS installer. The installer also put the /boot and /boot/efi files on sda1 and s...

Converting huge mbox to Dovecot mbox + indexes
Migrating from UW IMAP/Qpopper mbox to Dovecot mbox. I have ~500 users, some with HUGE mbox (500MB-1GB), is there a script to create the Dovecot indexes at night to help speed up the migration process. Any idea. Thanks Bertrand Leboeuf leboeuf at emt.inrs.ca

Re: update - 512 Simultaneous Callswith DigitalRecording
...dvantages to using tmpfs as opposed to the > following method: Matt, Its simple. To quote the docs, "tmpfs lives entirely in the kernel's caches" It will shrink and grow to accommodate the files that currently on the filesystem. So if you allocate 10GB for your /tmp but only use 500MB it will only use 500MB of RAM. Think of the time your server run out space on your RAM drive... With tmpfs you would still be ok for few weeks (provided you allocated enough space). :) This will also benefit whole system if /tmp is located on tmpfs, not that a stable, production asterisk system wou...

[LLVMdev] big bitcode files producing bad ARM asm
I have a rather large bitcode file which when run through "llc -march arm -O0" produces an asm file of about 500Mb. Trying to assemble this file with the ios assembler on osx gives me lots of "branch out of range" errors thanks to jump instructions overflowing the +/-32Mb relative jump limit. I've tried running llc with the hidden "-arm-long-calls" option, which solves the problem but f...

Improving Samba write performance on Linux
...nsure this has the desired effect. Linux and Windows File systems ------------------------------ Linux file systems, like the file systems on UNIX before it, are designed around the notion of "sparse" files. On such file systems, if you create a file, and then write one byte at position 500MB from the start of the file, the underlying file system will only allocate one single block to store the one byte that was written. Even though the size of the file on disk will be reported as 500MB+1 bytes, the actual space used on the disk will only be a single block. The block size of a file syst...

humor (was Re: OT: systemd Poll)
...s and early 2000's the price of a GB of memory went from ~$100,000 to ~$1000*. I guess a lot of the design decisions made for things like init were focussed on this. In 1995 is was common for server platforms to have 32Mb ram whereas the kernel alone in my PC here at home is consuming just over 500MB. It seems reasonable that software components built in 1997 will not be fit for purpose in 2017. * According to perfunctory google search: http://www.statisticbrain.com/average-historic-price-of-ram/

read.table freezes the computer
Hi All, I have a txt file to read into R. The size of it is about 500MB. This txt file is produced by calling write.table(M, file = "xxx.txt"), where M is a large matrix After running MM = read.table("xxx.txt"), the R gui keeps a cpu core/thread fully occupied forever. 64 bit R with 16GB RAM on Win7 64, i5 cpu should be capable. So if anyone knows...

Large files and symlinks
Hi, I'm mirroring a single server to multiple clients. Currently I'm using scp, but I (think I) want to use rsync. The files I'm mirroring are large - c.4GB (video data) Each client has a different set of these files. The transfer is done over the internet, and may fail (regularly!). I set up a separate directory for each client, and put in symlinks to the actual files (maximum

memory tops out at 1.84gb on OS X 10.4 machine w/ 5GB ram
Hi all, Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am on 10.4 with R2.2, and when loading a big text file (~500MB) with scan(file, what=character) I am throwing malloc errors that say I am out of memory...I have 5GB on this machine, and Activity Monitor tells me R is only up to ~1.84GB both times this has happened (running from terminal)... I am wondering why this is happening when I still have >2GB of...
