Format big drives (4TB) in the installer?
...iven this is a production server we'll likely be running CentOS. we've just ordered a new server (http://www.spectrumservers.com/ssproducts/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=26&idproduct=787) Originally I tried to simply upgrade an older server with more drive space, I installed six (6) 4TB drives and did a new CentOS 6.5 install but the OS would not allow me to configure more than 2TB per drive. Subsequent research leads me to conclude that if the bios supports UEFI and the installer boots as such then the installer should see 4TB drives without any issues. I'm also assuming...

ext3 4TB FS limit (FAQ)
Hi, I've a question about the max. ext3 FS size. The ext3 FAQ explains that the limit is 4TB. http://batleth.sapienti-sat.org/projects/FAQs/ext3-faq.html | Ext3 can support files up to 1TB. With a 2.4 kernel the filesystem size is | limited by the maximal block device size, which is 2TB. In 2.6 the maximum | (32-bit CPU) limit is of block devices is 16TB, but ext3 supports only up | to 4...

low end file server with h/w RAID - recommendations

Yes, 2.5" drive enterprise drives have been an issue. +1 for the WD Red drives, so far 3.5" w/ 2tb and 4tb drives, ZERO issues. I've had good luck with HGST NAS drives too. Unfortunately, that will come to an end soon (With WD ownin...

Q about msan : mapping 4TB
Hi, Porting msan to the Cavium T99 chip requires a VMA mapping of 4TB. The brute-force way of doing this would be by collecting memory segments that weren't mapped - from the results of the msan test harness - and creating mapped segments ranges. Lather, rinse, repeat until all the addressable segments are mapped in msan.h. But I was wondering if there isn'...

Maximum ext3 file system size ??
Hi, If the ext3 file system maximum size updated or it is still 4TB for 2.6.* kernel? The site at http://batleth.sapienti-sat.org/projects/FAQs/ext3-faq.html says that it is 4TB yet, but I would like to know if it is possible to create and use stable & easy-to-fix (or at least as stable & easy-to-fix as ext3) file systems as big as 100TB for 32 bit Linux a...

Copying TBs -> error -> work around
...d FROM not TO . . it is hard to see how that should be an issue? The backstory is that a relatively recent internal 8TB Seagate Barracuda had its 7.2TB sda5 (home) partition corrupted - which itself was suspicious but not impossible of course - so I had to switch temporarily to an external USB 4TB drive (which was a backup drive and was already up-to-date) for /home. So now this exercise is rsyncing back to a NEW internal 8TB Seagate Barracuda (sda5 again) . . If you are correct about rsync simply triggering an existing problem on the 4TB USB drive, would that problem going to be recogn...

Hard disk activity will not die down
I updated my backup server this weekend from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8. OS disk is SSD, /dev/md0 are two 4TB WD mechanical drives. No hardware was changed. 1. wiped all drives 2. installed new copy of 8 on system SSD 3. re-created the 4TB mirror /dev/md0 with the same WD mechanical drives 4. created the largest single partition possible on /dev/md0 and formatted it ext4 5. waited several hours for the cr...

Upgrading from V3.0 production system to V3.3
...icks rbrick1+rbrick2+rbrick3+rbrick4+>rbrick5+>rbrick6+rbrick7+rbrick8 -> dhtvolume (16TB dht glusterfs volume) I'm currently using over 12TB of storage and am seeing a time when I will run out of space. I want to upgrade our storage system to Gluster V3.3 and upgrade hard drives to 4TB models. I purchased a new server (same base hardware as the existing ones), but outfitted with new controller (that supports 4TB drives) and with 8 x 4TB drives (this is all working fine). When I get the first server running and populated I want to take one of the two old servers offline to upgra...

Question regarding cent OS 7.8.2003 compatibility with large SAS disks
Hello, I have a blade server with SAS HDD's of 12TB in total. 3 HDD's of 4TB each. Is it possible to install Cent OS 7.8.2003 on 12TB disk space? I will be installing Cent OS on the bare metal HW. I referred = https://wiki.centos.org/About/Product But slightly confused with the 'maximum file size' row for ext4 FS. Thanks & Regards, Amey.

EFI and RAID questions
Hi All; I have a new server we're setting up that supports EFI or Legacy in the bios I am a solid database guy but my SA skills are limited to what I need to get by 1) I used EFI because I wanted to create a raid 10 array with 6 4TB drives and apparently I cannot setup gpt partitions via parted in legacy mode (at least that's what I've read - is this true?) 2) I installed the OS on 2 500GB drives, I used to do all my installs with software RAID (mirrored) without LVM as follows: - create 2 raid partitions (one on e...
