Does 3MB/sec seem as fast as Samba is?
Hi All,
I've been experimenting with Samba 2.2.7a Debian 3.0
on a dual PIII 1000 SMP box, 1GB ram, and a fast RAID
5 array (150MB/sec write local). It seems that no
matter what options I set in smb.conf nor what
underlying filesystem I use (JFS, EXT3, XFS) I can
only get 3MB/sec MAX on writes out of samba from any
Windows client in my environment. Given that wire
speed for fast ethernet ought to be 11MB/sec (we see
this from UDP NFS on write all the time-same box)
what's the problem? Does TCP/IP really eat more than
half of the performance? During all of this, SMB...

Rsync download traffic
...ld consider a strange traffic pattern. This linux box rsync about 2Gb of data to a local samba share that is connected to a Windows 2003 server. Based on the literal data stat, roughly 20% is changed nightly and uploaded. However, the strange thing is that the traffic monitoring shows that there is 3mb/s saturation both ways, upload and download (somehow the server only had a 10mb ethernet adapter).
This behavior could not possibly be correct, could it? Or is this normal. If needed I can post some stats and command line options.
Thanks,

Router Recommendations Please
Hello all,
We've discovered that VoIP (IAX2) + Citrix + Video is pegging the measly
CPU on the Netopia router our ISP provided. We've got 3Mb/3Mb and will
increase to 4/4 next year.
The Netopia simply breaks out our WAN IPs, and we've got a switch hooked up
to it on the inside (Actually I've got a QoS box in-between).

Quota warning generated when crossing on both sides
...9;s personal quota (in MB). As you can see, we
ignore the 'Trash' box, when considering the usage data. We are using the
dict quota backend.
Now this is what happens. Assume we have 'user at example.org', that has a
quota of 10MB and he currently has 5MB in use. Now someone sends a 3MB
email towards 'user at example.org'. Dovecot does indeed generate the warning
message (75%), that arrives correctly 'together' with the 3MB email.
Now the user moves the 3MB email to trash. This goes well, however:
Dovecot generates the 75% warning message again. Which is not neces...

poor network performance on domU
...#39;s are accessible from the internet.
The network performance of the Dom0 is fine: I can saturate my 100Mb/
sec uplink both by uploading and downloading. Performance towards the
domU is fine as well. Performance from the DomU''s to the internet
however is dramatic: speeds start at 2-3MB/sec but quickly drop to
just a few KB/sec (!). Transfer of large files never end at all.
The server I''m running this on is a Supermicro H8SSL-i2 with and AMD
Opteron 1218 Dual Core proc, 4GB RAM, the NIC is a Broadcom 1G
interface connected to a 100Mb/sec switchport at my ISP.

wouldn't know about QOS, it'd give everybody equal priority. If a
computer plugged into the phone, and the phone into the dumb 5 port

3mb file, if the end user picked up the receiver and placed a call,
would that upload slow down in order to give the phone perfect call quality?

Imap Quota Exceeded - But Still Receiving Emails?
...e,
'maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n' as mail, 150 AS uid, 8 AS gid,
CONCAT('*:storage=', quota) AS quota_rule FROM mailbox WHERE username =
'%u' AND active = '1'
CONCAT('*:storage=', quota) AS quota_rule
quota_rule = *:storage=3M
So it picks up my set quota of 3MB but dovecot is not rejecting emails
if I am over my quota.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Performance question
I now have Dovecot in production and things are apparently trouble-free.
The one known problem is that initial client inbox load can take 30
seconds - 2 minutes. For instance:
'I got fed up waiting and went and got coffee'...this with a 3MB mbox
inbox...and my mail server is a substantial machine consuming 25% CPU
just for this person's IMAP session.
I realize that a certain amount of performance piggishness is inevitable
with large mbox inboxes (the prize goes to the user with a 500MB
inbox). Eventually, I plan to move to ma...

Instantrails.exe process wont shutdown.
...bout 50 Tablet PC''s - some HP
TC4200''s and some HP TC1100''s.
Installation etc isn''t a problem, but i have noticed that when i
shutdown Instantrails, it closes, but looking at the task manager it is
still listed as a process running in the background- utilizing @ 3MB of
memory or so.
If I restart Instantrails, it creates a new instance of Instantrails-
and continues to do so until either I log off, or shutdown - or manually
kill the process.
I really need to get this fixed ASAP.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris.

which firewall to automatically block bandwidth abusers?
Hi,
I'm looking for a firewall (preferably on Linux / UNIX) that could
automatically block bandwidth abusers as soon as a connection goes
over a certain speed, or limit - i.e. either more than say 3Mb/s or
10GB in a giving period (like weekly / monthly).
But, I need it to block the IP to, or where the traffic comes from, or
goes to. i.e. a user logs into a web server and upload a LOT of data,
then the firewall should block him, but not other people.
Or, someone uploads a small bit of data but...

Comments request to refute arguments about Samba...
...Systems Group here at UK. Right now, they are testing a "Student
Locker" system using SAMBA. It isn't widely in use yet, but results have
been promising (I guess). One concern has been the amount of RAM needed
for each SAMBA connection. On the test machine, SMB connections are using
~3MB/connection. At that rate, we'd need about 3GB of RAM to accomodate
our ~1000 machines.

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
Like many others, I am looking to put together a SOHO NAS based on ZFS/CIFS. The plan is 6 x 1TB drives in RAIDZ2 configuration, driven via mobo with 6 SATA ports.
I''ve read most, if not all, of the threads here, as well as sbredon''s excellent article on building a home NAS, yet I still have a number of unanswered questions.
I was leaning heavily towards the M2N-E for a while,

[LLVMdev] Emitting .zero
...0x4
.quad 4 # 0x4
[...]
The [...] pieces are huge. This isn't a zeroinitializer so its not
simply a matter of emitting zeroinitializers more efficiently.
Ideally we'd emit the zeros with a .zero directive.
In this case, doing so is the difference between a 3MB asm file and a
20MB asm file.
I searched the bug database but didn't find anything about this. Has
anyone looked at improving this? If not I'll work on it and get a
patch sent up.
But maybe it's fixed in 2.8 or something.

ext3 tuning parameters. what are they
When memory is low, ext3 gets a bit sluggish cursor getting jumpy etc. I
say ext3 because I don't see a similar behavior with ext2. What are the
ext3 tuning variables that I can try? For example, I see a message like
"commit interval 5 seconds" in /var/log/dmesg.

I'm configuring microsoft doc|ppt|xls viewers to run under KDE. After a

I noticed while running xlview.exe that wine proccess grows about 3mb in

slower. I'm using wine-20020122, but the same happens with cvs version
