I have used 3Com 3c509 nic width bnc coax. I have experienced that these cards used width FreeBSD and Samba is unusable due to speed. I tried to change the 3com card with a NE2000 compatible card, and there was a major change in speed. Has anyone else experienced such problem. Asgeir Stangeland

I suspect a number of the reported performance problems in this list are related to this - people tend to stick Linux and Samba on an old 486 then use this to serve an office full of brand new PIIs running WNT. Why the performance figures for the 3c509 were so much better I haven't a clue, unless the fact that it was an ISA card slowed the data rate sufficiently to minimise the windowing problem? I have a samba file server in a network on school.(mandrake 7.2) I use it as server for vcd files (virual cd). I have a share /data that is public I'm only able to connect from let's say 3 computers. Sometimes more. Is it a hardware problem? how do I solve that (now 3com 3c509). I tried also other (NE, AMDPCNET,...) Sometimes the win98boxes don't find the server in their network neigbourhood. What should I try. When I use my laptop as samba server (same config) I dont have the problem. Thanks

I'm trying to create a single floppy based boot disk that will, depending on what the user enters, boot redHat, SUSE or Debian.
