New tuned encoder
Hi all,
ome people asked if it was possible to
make an even higher quality mode by incorporating
some of the changes from the first tuned version
into the 350kbps mode.
I did so and made a new version with this new mode.
It gives bitrates from roughly 300-350kbps. That's
a lot, but it also gets very hard to find something
it artifacts on :) Should be sufficient for archival
quality.
In addition to the old 160kbps tuned mode, I also
had a stab at an 12...

bassrumble still there at 96kbps and below
Hi again,
shortly after beta 4 came out i noticed that rumbling artifact oggenc
puts into a certain tune of mine. Back then, it was even audible at an
ABR of 350kbps.
Now with RC2 that bug is completely gone at bitrates of 128kbps and
higher. I can hear it again at 96kbps and it becomes more apparent with
lower bitrates. At 64kbps, I assume, everybody should be able to hear
it.
This is not a stereo related artifact that has been introduced by the
lossy channl...

The cipher 'none' in OpenSSH
...h. Here, rcp (as in many other places, I guess)
is banned for security reasons. I, aswell as others, use scp regulary
to copy files from one machine to another.
The problem is, that the transfer rate is nowhere near what an 100Mbps
connection would give. To and from my P5-233 laptop gets only about
350KBps. Between P6-450 machines the performance is about double. In contrast
if I used ftp, I'd get much much more. I checked and noticed, that ssh
used up all the CPU power for encrypting the data.
I remember ssh-nonfree having a cipher 'none' which does not encrypt
the actual data. But it...

listing 2 streams - Non Icecast (Unix) servers
...on that would be great. I would love to get my Win32 Icecast Vorbis stream to list somewhere. Try it out. http://www.djlithium.com:8064/djlithium.ogg
The set up is an Icecast2 win32 (from Oddsock) Beta 1 server, with Oddcast DSP running in vorbis mode(of course)at64kbps using Ogg files encoded at 350kbps running through winamp on a Win2K system.
It would also be great to find a home for these stations in MP3 format. http://www.djlithium.com:8000/listen.pls and http://24.113.114.160:8000/listen.pls and http://24.113.1.24:8040/listen.pls which are not running Icecast or shoutcast.

Short block test
...f series of short periodical 'pulses', and this period
gets smaller as time passes.
You can get this file at:
http://www.uni-jena.de/~pfk/Short_Block_Test.wav.gz.gz (1.6MB)
(uncompress it twice with gzip)
I used oggenc beta3 & mp+ 1.7.8
Oggenc gave 160kbps using mode -b 256
mp+ gave 350kbps (using "standard" profile and with joint-stereo off)
I couldn't use mode -b 350 because oggenc always hangs at 98% with
this clip and the file produced has annoying distorsions...
Obviosly (like Monty said) Vorbis is still learning and needs more
tweaking in the short-block detectio...

Audio Quality Feedback (probably a bug?)
...th OggEnc v0.5 (beta3), and I've experienced a wierd artifact with a certain song ("Theme From Mission Impossible" by Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton). It's pretty subtle, but it's audible.
I've ripped the wave from the original CD, and encoded it at average bitrate 350kbps. I've noticed that at the start of the song (about 10 seconds from the beginning), one of the Bongo hits sounds a bit strange, more spatial than it should be. It's like the original Bongo is in the center, and there are two "echoes" to the bongo in the left and the right channels....

HTB traffic control over VLAN interface.
...d
ICMP.The upload bandwidth using the VLAN is desired one.Even the download
bandwidth using the VLAN interfaces with UDP and ICMP is correct.
But the problem arises when i am downloading anything using the VLAN
interfaces with TCP.Its is showing around 180kbps for the alloted 256kbps
and around 350kbps for 512kbps.
Thanking in Advance!

My Vorbis beta 2 impressions
Generally speaking, I can say that Vorbis already has pretty good quality,
better then MP3.
Mode 6 (~350kbps) - sounds great, no high-frequency artifacts and no
pre-echo in any of my 3 test cases (I use 3 tracks as pre-echo test cases:
1. castanets.wav from LAME homepage 2. drums from the begging of the song
Metallica - The Small Hours and 3. bass guitar from the begging of the song
Primus - My Name Is M...

comparison of beta2 and beta3 encoder quality
Hi,
I encoded some songs into 350 kbit/s with beta2 and beta3 too,
and I don't know why, but it seems the b2 sounds better (makes a
better quality ogg file)...
The b2 contains more the b3 contains less high sounds.
And with the b3, the size of file is smaller with 4-5%...
Do you know this problem, or do you think so, that the sound quality
is good (or better in the b3) ??
Please be carefull

artifact bug status? / compiling under OpenBSD 2.8
...st concerning an artifact bug
in beta4 that is audible in all available bitrates. It was this rumbling
sound in the bass area. I made a demo clip, which still is available at
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~us87/ogg/vorbis_bassrumble_demo.rar
and that contains both the original .WAV and an .OGG @ 350kbps. This
archive is 2.1 MB large.
Today, I finally managed to compile the CVS snapshot under Linux and
found that this bug is still there, so I'm now humbly asking whether
this is somewhere on the to-do list or whether it has been forgotten, if
I should put it into this bugzilla system, etc.? I...

Difficult sample for vorbis w/ audible artifacts
I came across an interesting test sample the other day while trying to
compress some of my music and trying out different encoders. You can grab
the sample in question from here:
http://www.animus-facticius.org
drone_clip.zip is a 9 second clip of the track where the artifact is most
apparent, drone_short.pac is a 1 minute clip of track. The sample is from
the song "Drone" from

Response to Ogg Vorbis comments
...t music is being
encoded. Channel coupling will take this same quality and drop it in
bitrate quite a bit, and at the same time we're now starting to
concentrate on lower bitrate modes. At the end of the proverbial day,
we should be kicking ass up and down the bitrate spectrum, from 16kbps
to 350kbps.

Preprocess the file as mentioned above and see if that works. From all
reports, it still sounds pretty good, and we haven't done tuning for
those rates...

This reminds me of a story :-). A guy goes to the butcher and asks how
much steaks are per pound. The butcher replies $10. The guy says that
the butcher across the street has stakes for $5. Butcher asks him why
he doesn't go and buy it there. The guy responds that the other butcher
