Does running redundancy with ZFS use as much disk space as doubling drives?
If I''m gonna use OpenSolaris, I will have to buy new hardware, which I can''t really defend at the moment. But I may be able to defend it in the near future if using redundancy on ZDF uses less disk space as simply getting extra drives and do identical copies, with periodic CRC checks of the source material to check the health. Or will I use as much drive space with redundancy?

Thanks, Nux!.
But a few hours late. I just purchased:

10-fold speed drop while transferring large files from Windows to Samba server
Hi All,
I have a Linux box (P3-800MHz/196MB RAM/10GB+320GB) running Samba
3.0.22 server and a Windows XP (P3-800MHz/512MB RAM/200GB) client.
The transfer speed (both ways) is about 5-7 MB/s when file is smaller
than 700MB. For larger files there is a difference: when the Win client
writes a file on the small Linux disk (10GB) the speed is as above. But
wh...

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?
Hi all
I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using
normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably
a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB).
My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device.
Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built
on FreeBSD), and it look like a great project, but since the hardware
support in FreeBSD is limit, I'd rather use Linux for it.
Has anyo...

[Off Topic, kind of] eMachine model T5254
...onsumeraffairs.com. I didn't take the time to do a thourgh search
so may have missed some. Red Hat hardware list does not have one
eMachine listed. I went to eMachine's home page and found the following:
AMD Athlon? BE-2350 dual-core processor
NVIDIA? GeForce? 6100
2048MB DDR2 dual-channel
320GB 7200rpm SATA II
16x DVD?R/RW SuperMulti drive
High-performance 15-in-1 digital media card reader
6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio
They do not list the manufacturer/model of the media card reader and
audio.
Any hardware guru see any problems?

cli Checking disk i/o
I just built a CentOS7 system on a Zotac NANO PC.
I used a 320GB 2.5" HD I had sitting around and installed with Standard
Partitions on XFS.
The drive is spinning, nonstop.
How can I monitor if there is actually disk i/o to warrant this constant
spinning.
So noatime for all partitions work with XFS?? I did some browsing and
the claim is XFS uses realt...

individuos.
Estas pequeñas cantidades creo que me están

Samba Server Specifications
Has anyone posted an up to date hardware review lately?
It seems clear that a RAID6 server with 300GB CHEETAH 15K.5 SAS drives will
trump a P3 with a 30GB IDE drive, however, not everyone will spend the money
required for the high end unit, I'm looking to build a new server & trying
to make best use of funds (aren't we all).

DejaDup looks interesting, but none of the repos I'm set up to use

some small details: I plan to use this to keep backups of my centos

have two 1TB drives, also in RAID-1. It will be a two drive enclosure
with PS and cooling, with USB3 or esata, but not networking.
I was thinking that it would be nice to have a full backup followed by
a set of incrementals, and software that allows acce...

AutoCad and ArcView
...dows.
We are utilizing a RAID 5 setup on dual 2.8 GHZ
4 GB RAM
Intel Controller card (all latest firmware, BIOS etc...etc..)
Only 4 users are accessing the server, but it seems after a few days the
server starts to choke up, lock files, and it causes a hardware issue.
(We have burned through 2 320GB drives in 2 months)
It is possible of course that the controller card is failing, but to
take some of the stress off of the machine does anyone have a tweaked
smb.conf that has NO issues with serving up files of this size all day
(80-200MB)
Thanks in advance

Install Help

It boots to the CentOS media I had in the dvd drive
I start the install
it comes up and asks me where I have CentOS, I select 'Local CD' and I get that a message saying CentOS install files cannot be found. Strange because it boots to it!
What could be the issue?
I have 1 320gb Sata Drive connected to onboard Sata and that is where I want to install.
The DVD drive is connected IDE to the mobo
I have two 3ware raid cards each can handle 8 drives, but I have not put drives in yet. I am just trying to make sure everything works before I go that route. The 16 drives will be s...

Email migration
...ovecot 1.2.11 on Debian 5 for our production
email systems. We just deployed some new Debian 7 servers and we will be
upgrading to the latest dovecot version. I've been reading the docs, but I
wanted to heard some feedback on the import of all my current email into the
new installation. We have 320GB worth of email. Any gotchas I should be
prepared for? Any complications I should be aware of when importing all
these data?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.
