speed issues? read R_inferno by Patrick Burns: & a memory query
Hi, I'm just starting out with R and came across R_inferno.pdf by Patrick Burns just yesterday - I recommend it! His description of how 'growing' objects (e.g. obj <- c(obj, additionalValue) eats up memory prompted me to rewrite a function (which made such calls ~210 times) so that it used indexing into a dimensioned object instead (i.e. obj[i, ] <- additionalValue). understanding output of tapply/by cumsum
Dear R-users, I have a dataset with categories and numbers. I would like to compute and add cumulative numbers to the dataset. I do not understand the structure of by(...) or tapply(...) output enough to handle it. Here a small example -------------- d<-expand.grid(a=1:5,b=1:3,c=1:2) d$n = 10 * d$a + d$b +0.1* d$c Sn<-by(d$n,list(d$a,d$c),cumsum) str(Sn) --------- List of 10 $ : num

su, context(selinux?) 2nd prompt
With a recent update of CentOS4, su's behavior has changed, in that after prompting for password, also prompts for (selinux?) context. I'm seeing something like: $ su Password: Your default context is root:system_r:unconfined_t. Do you want to choose a different one? [n] kde's kdesu barfs on this second prompt. Any way to disable this second prompt? -- Rex

Multiple line plots
Greetings, I would like to plot three lines on the same figure, and I am lost. There is an answer to a similar thread… but I tried matplot and it is beyond me. An example of the data follows: Year EM IM BM 1983 9.1 16.8 -7.7 1984 12.0 18.0 -6.0 1985 13.6 19.1 -5.5 1986 12.4 17.3 -4.9 1987 14.6 20.3 -5.7 1988 20.6 23.3 -2.6 1989 25.0 27.2 -2.2 1990 28.4 30.2 -1.8 1991 33.3 31.2 2.1 1992 40.6

Problem Reading from .txt
I apologize that I've asked a similar question before, but being new to R I don't think I did a very good job of formating the question. I've included a text file since the date set is somewhat large. What I have is a huge string of numbers in a text file. The numbers are all separated by comma's and the groups are separated by a semicolon. What I would like to do is read each

The "LST" format is "YYMMDDHHmm" and I would like to get the hourly average of the "mph" for the summer months (spanning all years). cr repo firefox el6.6 crashes on 6.5
Noticed firefox is one of the only critical sec. updates from 6.6. So I manually downloaded the rpm from cr repo and rpm -Uvh firefox-31.2.0-3.el6.centos.x86_64.rpm but it crashes with /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/firefox/libxul.so: undefined symbol: gdk_window_get_visual

Plotting with R: setting the y axis
I have a series of numbers I'm wanting to plot. They come from a nanodrop machine, which graphs with a specific x and y indices. X goes from 220nm to 350nm, which I can set. But the y axis should go from -5 to 65, but I'm finding it impossible to hardcode that. I've looked. I've typed ?plot at the R prompt. Google has not been my friend. _R Graphics_, if it holds the key, has not

FreeBSD and serial ata
Dear List, This is my second post since I did not receive any answers the first time. I have P4P800-VM motherboard with serial ata controlers (ICH5) and serial ata discs. I managed to install FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE on this box when setting the IDE controller in legacy mode. Everything works normal except when booting, the drives are set into UDMA33 mode: atapci0: <Intel ICH5 SATA150

I have updated my instructions on how to roll your own CentOS-4 Live CD. I also made a script which does it all for you. I have also got instructions on how to turn the Live CD into a PXE bootable Live version. 4.9-20030914-PRERELEASE hangs during boot
I just noticed the 4.9-20030914-PRERELEASE and made a set of installation boot floppies from it to see which of the devices in my new PC the PRERELEASE would support. It wedged hard during the boot autoconfiguration monologue, just after typing these lines on the console: atapci0: <Intel ICH5 ATA100 controller> port 0xf000-0xf00f,0-0x3,0-0x7,0-0x3,0-0x7 irq 0 at device 31.1 on pci0 ata0:

Speex inner_prod()
Hi, Basically, inner_prod() can and should be adapted to the architecture it will run on. It is not really sensitive to noise, so it's possible to tweak it a lot. Also, in the current code, I saturate it to +-16384, which is OK to prevent overflows. I'm not concerned with the case of a constant -16384 value because it can't really happen in practice (especially after filtering). BTW,
