Advice on setting up Raid and LVM
Hi all,
I'm setting up Centos4.2 on 2x80GB SATA drives.
The partition scheme is like this:
/boot = 300MB
/ = 9.2GB
/home = 70GB
swap = 500MB
The RAID is RAID 1.
md0 = 300MB = /boot
md1 = 9.2GB = LVM
md2 = 70GB = LVM
md3 = 500MB = LVM
Now, the confusing part is:
1. When creating VolGroup00, should I include all PV (md1, md2, md3)? Then
create the LV.
2. When setting up RAID 1, should I make those...

throughput of 300MB/s
Hello,
are there any experiences with samba as a _really_ fast server?
Assuming if the filesystem and network is fast enough, has anyone managed
to get a throughput in samba of of let's say 300 MB/s ?
Are there any benchmarks?

no callback on VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_BALLOON_CHANGE in 0.10.2
...and/or subsequent balloon
movement inside the guest? Or, is my old version of qemu-kvm not passing
this event back to libvirt? The latter doesn't seem correct because I'm
getting seemingly-valid values from dommemstat - ie, if I setmem 200MB when
the guest OS and applications are consuming 300MB, it reports near 300MB
(and the guest no longer responds) instead of just parroting the 200MB value
I fed it.
Thanks!

Possible funny with /sbin/fsck
...we have a bunch of dual processor Compaqs with 180GB RAID

thought I'd try out ext3 (on our development machine :-) to see
whether it was a practical proposition for this kind of thing yet.
Appears to be working so far, with a 300MB journal (based on the rule
of thumb in the ext3 README), but we did notice that whereas our
(RedHat) /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit said to do a...
initlog -c "fsck -C -T -R -A -a $fsckoptions"
to check the non-root filesystems, we actually got a crash from the

Memory use and a few other things
Hello,
First of all thanks a lot for working on this free nvidia driver.
1.) I am using Fedora9-Beta, and on my NV17/64mb (or NV18?) powered
Laptop the nouveau driver uses about 300mb RAM. Is there any way I can
decrease that?
2.) Font rendering is very slow. running "x11perf --aa10text" I only
get 40k glyphs/s.
Is there any way I can improve text performance?
3.) I would like to downgrade to linux-2.6.16.60 - because a driver I
need was broken starting arround 2.6.1...

Very slow samba performance on Centos 6
...rs with 10gig card, running centos 6 with
samba-3.5.4-68.el6_0.2.x86_64.
I setup 16G ramdisk samba share on both and ran cp from local ramdisk to
samba ramdisk mount.
If I cp 12 1-gig files, I get combined 100MB/s transfer rate. Single file cp
maxes out at about 15MB/s.
Ftp transfer give me over 300MB/s.
Running with 9000 MTU. Most smb.conf is default. I even disabled atime and
tried ext2 and xfs on ramdisk.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ext3 and 3ware RAID5
I run a decent amount of 3ware hardware, all under centos-4. There seems
to be some sort of fundamental disagreement between ext3 and 3ware's
hardware RAID5 mode that trashes write performance. As a representative
example, one current setup is 2 9550SX-12 boards in hardware RAID5 mode
(256KB stripe size) with a software RAID0 stripe on top (also 256KB
chunks). bonnie++ results look

dreplsrv memory
Hi !
Since few months, dreplsrv is eating lots of memory in few days. Within 2 weeks, the process is generaly OOM killed and replication become weired. I need to restart samba-ad-dc.
Here is my config :
- Samba 4.11.6 / 4 vcpu / 2Go Ram
- 10215 objects (ldbs file = 300MB)
This memory problem only happen on my headbridge DC (star topolgy with 20 DC)
If I add some ram, the problem occures later but is the same (dreplsrv is eating more memory and swap)
Since few week, one of my DC is offline and this memory problem get worse. I need to restart samba service every wee...

Weird xl mem-set behavior
...M, running 2.6.38-6 with pv_ops and Xen 4.1
If I want to set the amount of memory for dom0, I get very bogus
results. See here: http://pastebin.com/gRgY9ERN If I use the M
notation (xl mem-set 0 4096M) the outcome is similarily unpredictable,
and sometimes I get the memory set to something like 200-300MB and in
rare cases a kernel panic.
Also, if I set the "dom0_mem=X" kernel parameter, the amount of memory
Xen gives to dom0 is fairly random... sometimes 2GB, sometimes 6GB,
sometimes ~500MB, regrardless of what value I use or the unit I use (M
or no unit, for the default KB).

This is my user attribute in /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf:

So i was expecting of a 300MB quota for that user, but dovecot is using the

Handling large data sets via scan()
...to read in datasets with roughly 150,000 rows and 600
features. I wrote a function using scan() to read it in (I have a 4GB
linux machine) and it works like a charm. Unfortunately, converting the
scanned list into a datafame using as.data.frame() causes the memory
usage to explode (it can go from 300MB for the scanned list to 1.4GB for
a data.frame of 30000 rows) and it fails claiming it cannot allocate
memory (though it is still not close to the 3GB limit per process on my
linux box - the message is "unable to allocate vector of size 522K").
So I have three questions --
1) Why is it...

CentOS 8 partiitioning for reliability
...r running CentOS 7. Yeah, it's gross overkill for
that and I expect to tuck most of the drives away for spares.
How should I RAID and partition this beast for maximum reliability?
My current C7 system is using 1 TB of 2 TB capacity on the root partition
(4x 1 TB drives in RAID 10). /boot is 300MB/50GB. Memory and swap is 8GB
each.

Gluster performance / Dell Idrac enterprise conflict
...ed cluster that is providing storage
for our RHEV environment. We've been having issues with inconsistent
performance from the VMs depending on which Hypervisor they are
running on. I've confirmed throughput to be ~9Gb/s to each of the
storage hosts from the hypervisors. I'm getting ~300MB/s disk read
spead when our test vm is on the slow Hypervisors and over 500 on the
faster ones. The performance doesn't seem to be affected much by the
cpu, memory that are in the hypervisors. I have tried a couple of
really old boxes and got over 500 MB/s. The common thread seems to be

Memory issues on a 64-bit debian system (quantreg)
...contains > 500,000 samples).
With this said, after 30 mins or so of processing, I got the
following error:

rqss(ltbmu_4_stemsha_30m_exp.img~qss(ltbmu_eto_annual_mm.img),tau=.99,data=boundary_data)
Error: cannot allocate vector of size 1.5 Gb
The dataset is a bit big (300mb or so), so I'm not providing it
unless necessary to solve this memory problem.
Thoughts? Do I need to compile either the main R "by hand" or the
quantreg package?

3Ware 9550SX-4LP Performance
...now there are a few 3Ware fans here and I was hoping to find some help. I
just built a new server using a 3Ware 9550SX-4LP with four disks in raid 5.
The array is fully initialized but I'm not getting the write performance I was
hoping for -- only 40 to 45MB/Sec.
3Ware's site advertises 300MB/Sec writes using 8 disks on the PCI Express
version of this card (the 9580 I think.) I'm guessing 4x PCI Express has more
bandwidth but 133Mhz 64-bit PCI-X is no slouch. The only two things I need to
change are to put the disks in 3GB/Sec SATA mode (they're in 1.5GB/Sec mode
right now)...
