VoIP Gateway Performance
Supposed scenario: one PC(2GHz CPU), one card 4E1, and one Internet link.
There is somebody he know (has experienced) how many concurrent call (Classical Phone->Voip) can handle Asterisk ?
Thanks !

OT: 4 dual cores agains 2 quad cores
Hi people,
Do you have pointers to web documents that help me make comparisons
between buying a server with two quad core 2.33 ghz or buying a 4 dual
core 2ghz server?
I am trying to answer a question of performance. It is not important
the redundancy/failover or the price of the server. Just the
performance.
obviously all the hardware specs are the same, the question is the CPU.

CentOS 4.3 on Intel Xeon Core 2 Duo
...e new Core2 Duo based Xeons
(5100 series) are considerably faster in some scenarios than Opteron
machines while not beeing more expensive, I would like to hear some
real-world experiences from people who have installed CentOS 4.3 or 4.4
on such a setup.
Specifically:
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 5100 2GHz
Board: Intel S5000 chipset
RAID5: 3ware 9550SXU-4LP
I have some experience with the 3ware Adapter (new kernel module needed
on install) but now nothing about compatibility, extra drivers or other
problems related to the relatively new Xeon/S5000 platform and CentOS
4.3/RHEL 4.3.
Thanks for any...

No 3D in KDE, other effects work
In Ubuntu 7.10 with KDE, I have compiz running under XGL. Although
Beryl ran fine in Ubuntu 7.04, Compiz will not enable 3D effects such
as wobbly windows. Other effects, such as minimize/restore animations,
work properly. The machine is a Dell Inspiron 6400 / E1505 laptop,
2Ghz Intel DuoCore2, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400, 1680x1050 widescreen. What
should I begin to troubleshoot?
Thanks in advance.

backup server..
...been playing with CentOS quite a bit lately (and I must say it's
growing on me!! :) and I was now able to convince my boss that we could
get a box and gradually start migrating our hosting from win2k3 to
centos.
So anyway, I've got a new box at the colo ready up and running - P4 3Ghz
w/HT 2Ghz RAM 2x70Gb HDD, running Centos4.4 fully up-to-date. Now my two
questions are;
(1.) In terms of backup, I'd like to have a cron sending out an nightly
incremental backup of user files. I'd also like to have HDA to be copied
backed up entirely (maybe weekly) onto HDB (were're not going t...

os x and samba performance vs netatalk
Client:
Dual 1GHz G4 OSX 10.2

Server:
Dual 2GHz P4 Linux 2.4.18

With netatalk 1.5.5 I get sustained writes of 66MB/s (yes, megabytes)
With samba 2.2.7a I get sustained writes of 15MB/s
I've tweaked the settings and ended up with these:

Windows Xen VM's have high guest CPU usage and poor performance
...reported by xm top is 622%. It seems like Xen is just performing poorly
while handling these Windows VMs. Any suggestions? I have Windows VM's
on other hardware (typically PowerEdge R905s and R710s and they seem ok).
This 2950 is a decent machine.. 32G RAM, 2x Xeon E5405 (quad core) at

Sample config:

Performance with 200k messages in Maildir
What should I expect performance-wise if I put 200000 messages in a
Maildir store and use two or three MUAs (mutt and Thunderbird), on an
Athlon dual core 2GHz with SATA drives in software RAID (Linux)?
Like; would it be useless/crawling, usable or pretty fast. I imagine MUA
startup / first time folder read would be slow, but daily use more or
less ok.
Thanks to Dovecot's indexing, I imagine I would be better off
interfacing Mutt to Maildir via IMAP...

crossprod vs %*% timing
...east for this
task. What is a good way of thinking about such issues? Anyone got
any performance tips?
I quite often need things like 'a %*% X %*% t(Y) %*% Z %*% t(b)' which
would be something like
crossprod(t(crossprod(t(crossprod(t(crossprod(a,X)),t(Y))),Z)),t(b))
(I think).

Linux wins hands down. I am sitting typing this out on a Dual G5 2ghz,
and I find Linux to be much more responsive than OSX.
anandtech had a write-up recently where they compared OSX Server to
Linux on the server side of things, iirc correctly - Linux came out on
top. A bit of googling should dig up the exact article.

Hardware Specifications
Does anyone know where i can find out how powerful a machine has to be to
handle a certain amount of call volume?
Eg, 2Ghz is enough processing power to maintain 100 calls at a time.
4Ghz is engouh to process 250 calls etc etc.
Thanks
Dan

Asterisk + Monitor() Poor quality
Hi. I'm using the Monitor command to record outgoing calls through SIP, but
the quality is very poor, MUCH worse than the call itself who many times is
perfect. I can barely understand anything thats said.
Im using Asterisk 1.4.21.2 on a Ubuntu Server 8.10, on a Pentium R 2ghz with
1gb DDR2.
That also happens if I use the Record command. I'm using Monitor inside an
AGI file, could that be the problem? Or do you think its something else?

Channel delay with ices2
I've installed icecast2 and ices (from CVS 3 days ago) on a Redhat9 box

The problem is that with 2 channel, there is a small delay between the
channels; if I use only 1 channel, all is ok, but I need stereo signal with
optimal quality...

Slow rsync Performance
Hi all,
I know this subject is extensively discussed on the mail list but I did not
get the solution yet..
I have a server running RedHat Linux 7.2 (2 CPU, 4 Gb RAM) and 6 client
machines running RedHat linux 7.1 ( 1 cpu(2Ghz),512 Mb RAM ). I am backing
up the client machine every 15 minutes since these machines generates
important data. I am using rsync as a cron job on the server to backup these
clients over ssh. It worked fine with a 5 Gb total, 100,000 files. But after
that the time it takes to sync increased fr...
