copy files to windows thru smbmount
hello
i have this strange problem:
i've ounted up a windows share on my linux machine, and tryign to copy a file to it, which is bigger than 2gbs, and it fails with a "maximum file size exceeded" error.
the linux is running ext3, and windows is ntfs, so the size limit must be somewhere in samba.
i've read on http://www.mail-archive.com/samba@lists.samba.org/msg10412.html about this.
ive tryed 2.2.9, 2.2.11, 2.2.12, even one f...

What's a Reasonable Inbox Size?
Greetings,
I have several users who have inboxes that are over 20 GB.
Lately I have noticed Dovecot logs say it's taking over 30 seconds to
sync their mailboxes.
As email admins,? how do you handle inboxes that are so large? Do you
use mailbox types that have better performance like dbox? We're using
maildir.
What's a reasonable inbox size?? Is 20+ GB reasonable and nothing to

Many questions from a potential btrfs user
...? How much overhead
will be needed to perform the conversion? I can (temporarily) remove some
files that already are on this backup.
* Is it possible to deduplicate the files that are already in it? As
mentioned before, there are likely to be many, and some of them are on the
order of 1 to 2GBs.
* Doing a defragmentation with the filesystem mounted with compression will
recompress the files (if they are deemed compressible by the
filesystem). Is that understanding correct? Will compressed blocks among
many files also be deduplicated?
* How exactly do the recently merged offline d...

[External] What's a Reasonable Inbox Size?
...stion.
At my firm, we wrote rotation tools that work for mbox format to rotate
inboxes monthly if they are over a certain size.? We also do the sent
items folders.
We find that large inboxes are bad for the server and bad for the client
because the MUAs just don't handle it well either.? 1 or 2GBs and you
start to see issues.
After a little bit of user training, they like it.? Part of the routine
maintenance they need.

Performance Increase Suggestions
Hello Everyone,
I have a few users that are complaining about the "slowness" of
copying files to and saving files directly to the Samba server. From my
own recollections, the speed is rather identical to the speed we
experienced on our old Windows NT 4.0 fileserver.
One thing that could be the impetus of this issue is that Samba
is serving up files, for opening and copying from the

System deadlock when using mksnap_ffs
I've been playing around with snapshots lately but I've got a problem on
one of my servers running 7-STABLE amd64:
FreeBSD paladin 7.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE #8: Mon Nov 10 20:49:51 GMT 2008 tdb@paladin:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PALADIN amd64
I run the mksnap_ffs command to take the snapshot and some time later
the system completely freezes up:
paladin# cd /u2/.snap/
paladin#
