P4 processor with Hyperthreading and Asterisk
Hello,
I read an interesting article on 2cpu.com that talks about the performance
differences between a P4 processor with Hyperthreading(HT) enabled and
disabled.
http://www.2cpu.com/articles/ht_explored/index.html
The bottom line of the article is that processor intensive applications
greatly benefit from HT being enabled, but memory intens...

Tuning system response degradation under heavy ext3/2 activity.
Hello.
I'm looking for assistance or pointers for the following problem.
OS: RHAS2.1 enterprise16
HW: HP proliant 2CPU 6GB RAM, internal RAID1 + RAID5(4 x 10K 72GB)
When we run any kind of process (especially tar for some reason) that
creates heavy disk activity the machine becomes Very Slow, (e.g. takes
30-45 seconds to get a reply from ls at the console, or a minute to log
in.)
I experimented with data=journal...

Fw: Xen, full virtualization and Virtual Machine Manager ?
I downloaded and ran the live CD from
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/LiveCD which worked fine on a Lenovo,
Intel Core 2CPU 6300@1.86 GHz with 2GB of ram and 80 GB disk space.
The next step was to recreate a working version on this machine, using
full virtualization of some test OS''s, one goal would be Microsoft Server
20xx and being able to view the console of the guest machine.
I have kernel 2.6.26-2-xen...

Transparent Video Codec
I'm planning on building a media file server, from which I can host
media files to several set top boxes connect to my television. My plan
is to have a huge collection of music and many emulated games, and
movies. The idea is to just have a stripped down file server with a
large and hard drive, fast network connect. So from any system in my
house I could have access to all of my media.

hibernation test result of windows srv2008 R2 x64 hvm and winpv guest
...th windows pv
driver. The test case is common scenario test(one test case of WHQL
test), this test case will hibernate the vm for many times, and doing
some IO operations for devices. The windows guest is Srv2008 R2 x64.
Following is my test result
HVM guest with pv driver,
machines 1cpu and 2cpu

AMD pass pass
Intel pass BSOD
It seems the test result is connected with the cpu type and cpu number.
AMD environment passed this test case, but Intel environment failed with
4cpus. The BSOD always caused by windows kernel file instead of windows
pv driver binaries. And i failed to f...

Oracle and kernel 2.6 vs 2.4 performance question
All,
We're currently running Oracle 9i on a RHEL AS 2.1 installation. We
need to upgrade to Oracle 10g, and I've half-way convinced my boss to
upgrade to RHEL 4 (we're still discussing AS vs ES, since we're running
2 HT processors...).
Anyway, I want to upgrade because of EOL issues whenever RHEL 5 comes
out, but before he okays me wiping the server and installing 4, he

maximum cpus/cores in CentOS 4.1
What is the maximum number of AMD64 cores supported by CentOS 4?
The RedHat page https://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/configuration/
suggests that RHEL 4 AS supports up to 8 AMD64/EM64T logical cpus. Is
that accurate and does it apply to CentOS 4?
I see a few vendors offering boxes with 8 (dual core) CPU sockets.
IWILL for one.
Thanks,

Linux Standalone Server Suggestions for R
Hi All,
My group is looking for any suggestions on what to purchase to
achieve the most powerful number crunching system that $50k can buy.
The main application that will be used is R so input on what hardware
benefits R most will be appreciated. The requirements are that it be
a single standalone server (i.e. not a cluster solution), and it that
must be able to run unix/linux. If

[PATCH] Btrfs: improve the performance fluctuating of the fsync
...the current fsync had already completed. Those ordered
extents whose csum was being calculated didn''t belong to the current
fsync, we can ignore them.
By this patch, the performance fluctuating doesn''t happen, and the average
performance grows up by ~2%.

Memory: 4GB
Partition: 20GB(HDD)
Test Command:

err: Connection timeout calling puppetmaster.getconfig: execution expired
Hi all,
My current conf splits 188 clients execution in one hour, and puppet
runs as a cron job. My server (2cpu 2 GB RAM) runs with mongrel (with 8
puppetmasterd) and this conf works fine.
We''d like puppet to run clients all at same time (force a change, i.e.),
so we''re testing several things. (Previous conf do not support
massive execution).
First and most important, is moving our ser...
