Issues with Samba
Hi I cannot seem to find any information regarding this in the mailing lists . I am testing a UNIX PDC before I implement it to general use in the network . It works fine It would appear with the win 2000 clients. But I essentially have two problems 1. When I have PGP installed on the machine and log in with a roaming profile . It creates a network associates folder that does not get

aio settings for samba 4.3
...all on freebsd and I'm confused about aio settings. I've loaded the freebsd aio kernel module and tried various values or aio read size and aio write size, but it seems to make no difference in the speed. Using MS diskspd against a samba share from a fast zfs pool I get something like 25MB/s tops. That's well below the capacity of my Gb network and my disk system. FWIW iperf shows >900Mbits/sec in both directions on the link. # smbd -b|grep aio vfs_aio_fork_init vfs_aio_posix_init vfs_aio_pthread_init As always google finds lots of tuning advice, but it's n...

Hosting on VPS
I have a VPS account with 256MB guaranteed RAM. I am running it as Apache1.3 -> Pen -> mongrel_cluster (with 2 mongrel servers). "top" shows 2 "ruby" instances (I guess for both of the mongrel servers), each weighing in at about 25MB. Does that sound about right? If you are using 2 mongrel servers per client app, does that mean that each RoR app needs 50MB+ dedicated RAM? Just curious because someone was saying that they can fit alot more clients per VPS account writing their apps in PHP. Personally the benefits of RoR f...

Performance after failover
...from. I put up an iptables firewall on the active server, and the client hung, as expected. After some time, I guess about 30 seconds, the failover kicked in and the operations went to the other server, resuming the read. However, after going to the other server, throughput went from ~100MB/s to ~25MB/s. Kicking off a new read after the previous one had succeeded went straight to the second server, with throughput still at ~25MB/s. Is this the expected behavior for clients that have failed over from one server to another ? torbjorn at srv18:~$ sudo gluster volume$ Volume Name: testvol$ Type: D...

smbd process grows to 25Mb resident size
Hi, I've 4 Samba servers running 3.0.21c in solaris 10 zones. One PDC, 3 BDCs. The machines are identically installed and the samba binaries and associated libraries are copied between the machines so are also identical. On my PDC which seems to be accepting almost all of the clients, my smbd processes are 33M with 25M resident. This seems to be used by dev:32,0 ino301938 ,see pmap

squid cache question
...em we are facing is that we have download restrictions for every client to 25 MB during work hours except for a particular client. Now when this exception client downloads the files from apple.com it gets downloaded from the site and gets stored in the cache but as the download restrictions are for 25MB the files which are even in cache with size more than 25MB are not accessed by the other clients, if we remove download restriction for that client then the software gets downloaded. Is there any way we can allow any client to access objects/files in cache without removing the download restrictio...

cptime/memdisk block size
...ble about what block size MEMDISK uses to load (big iso/harddisk) image files? Experimenting with cptime.c32 on a Lexar Triton Jumpdrive (64GB, 170MB/s read in Windows, 150MB/s write in Windows) on bootable USB3.0 resulted in the following, depending on specified block size: * 2048 bytes --> 25MB/s * 2MB --> 61MB/s It would be nice to know at which speed MEMDISK is loading, but a stopwatch seems a bit crude as only method. Xen and networking.
...uests uses one of the interfaces and this is verified at the switch by seeing the unique MAC addresses. If I do a crude test from one guest over nfs, dd if=/dev/zero of=/nfs/test bs=32768 count=32768 This yields almost always 95-100MB/sec When I run two simultaneously, I cannot seem to get above 25MB/sec from each. It starts off with a large burst like each can do 100MB/sec, but then in a couple of seconds, tapers off to the 15-40MB/sec until the dd finishes. Things I have tried (installed on the host and the guests) net.core.rmem_max = 16777216 net.core.wmem_max = 16777216 net.ipv4.tcp_rm...

While I'm Thinking About metaflac...
...thing I've noticed. Sometimes when I use metaflac to add tags, it performs it's operation instantly in a split second. Other times the same command causes lot of HDD I/O's and I can see it create a "filename.flac.metadata_edit" temp file. For example - I just added tags to a 25MB file and it took 15 seconds to process the command. Can anyone help me understand why there's different behaviors like this? It's not a problem, just want to understand. Thanks, - Brad -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.xiph.org/p...

ACL issues still unresolved
Hi all, The two problems I'm having with ACLs on a W2k domain are still no closer to a solution. To wit, they were: (a) Users accessing the ACL properties dialog on W2k can modify and remove existing ACLs on a given file, but they cannot add new ones (that can only be done with setfacl on the cmdline; the changes are then recognised); (b) In said ACL properties dialog, the usernames

CentOS 3 vs. CentOS 4 Memory Utilization
...don't want to add more RAM to the box at this time, although that could be an option down the road). I ran some tests under VMWare with fresh installations of CentOS 3 and CentOS 4 (both using a "minimal install", the same as the server in question) and CentOS 4 seemed to only use 10-25MB more memory. However, it's hard to know how this will translate into real-world performance over time and with the application installed. Does anyone have any experience that would suggest how much more memory a non-X server like this might require? If the application(s) on the server stay th...

linux server completely hangs copying files with samba
hi, i'm experiencying a strange problem with a mandrake 9.0 machine, kernel 2.4.19, samba (different versions, including latest). when I copy large amount of data from any win98 machine to a share directory on linux, after a random time the linux machine hangs; not responding even to ctrl-alt-canc, only possibility is to reset. I was using a realtek 8139 (driver 8139too) which I know

creating bootable images.
hello guys. i've been digging through the mail list archive for a few days, to no avail. i hope you can help me : i want to create a bootable DOS image, approximately 25MB , to boot a system from the network, using PXELINUX . now, i've followed some instructions on this list, but the image always fails to boot. the only thing which succeeds, is to take a bootable DOS disk, put it in the floppy drive, do a "dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dos.img", and provide thi...
