CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
...owing kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration:
pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1
i915.i915_enable_fbc=1
(in /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.conf since I use EFI,
/boot/grub/grub.conf otherwise)
As measured using PowerTop, this made the power consumption decrease
from 20W to 11W !
(I had already decreased it from 25W to 20W with the usual tips of
disabling hardware, shutting down services, switching tuned profiles,
etc.)
All in all, battery time was more than multiplied by two, and the
computer is now much more silent since the fan is not always running

DUNDi precache
Does anyone have any information on how to use DUNDi precaching?
Mark Spencer made a post 2 years ago where he hinted it may be possible to configure DUNDi such that you could centralise your DUNDi registration info by using precaching, instead of having each DUNDi peer meshed with every other one...

Samba not obeying locking = no from smb.conf file
...y smb.conf :
[cdrom]
comment = Samba server's CD-ROM
writable = no
locking = no
path = /media/cdrecorder
public = yes
When I go to that share from a Windows workstation it does still lock as
you can see:
[root@pc843 ~]# lsof | grep cdrecorder
smbd 9647 root 20w DIR 22,0 2048 1792
/media/cdrecorder
smbd 9647 root 27r DIR 22,0 2048 1792
/media/cdrecorder
This prohibits me of ejecting my cdrom when someone's browsing it.
I have version 3.0.14a-2
Is this a bug or expected behavior?

Firewall/Gateway Hardware Question
I've given up on getting the other machine to work so I'm looking at
building a new one.
The machine will be a firewall/gateway running NAT, Web Proxy with
Dansguardian, DHCP, DNS, NTP and VPN (~6 clients).
I read so much about VPN encryption and the processor needs, now I am unsure
if this will work.
I can get this for AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core

I am trying to finish building a system and I kind of need to pick
working NIC and onboard SATA chipsets (video is not a big deal - I can
get a silent PCIe card for that, I already know one which works great)
I need 8 onboard SATA. I would prefer Intel CPU. At least one gigabit
port. That''s about it.

"Broken mailbox list" with virtual plugin
...Some investigation of the source code tells me that this error means that
there was corrupt data in the index. In particular, the ext_data read from the
index was not long enough to contain all mailbox names. Adding some debug code

Raid / dual Opteron power issues
Hi All,
I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware
9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB
disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply.
It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor
behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to
Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system

UPS rating for SOHO asterisk box
Slightly OT, but I think this is of possible interest to many of you,
I need to get a UPS for my asterisk box. They are rated in VA but I
can't quite figure out how that converts to real life.
I have a PIII-800 box with two X100P and one TDM400P plus graphics
adapter, an IDE hard drive etc. Will a small 400VA box be enough for
this?
