Hi,
Is it possible?, say I want to install a windows-based database MS SQL
relational database application into a SAMBA via a Windows XP Pro
workstation.
Say, I have server-based database application which is normally installed
DIRECTLY into Windows NT/200x server machine on a CD that is MS Windows
formatted.
I have this CD which has everything in it, simply follow the steps to normally

Print Options for All Users Can't Be Set on Windows 200x/XP
Hi everyone
This is a simple question by a person who knows nothing about windows.
The solution is at
http://us5.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/CUPS-
printing.html#id2618536
Under the heading
Print Options for All Users Can't Be Set on Windows 200x/XP
My problem is step I. Open the Printers folder
Where is this? the only thing I can find is "printers and faxes" in
control panels. Am I missing something really obvious? why can't
microsoft just use unix?

Samba 3.0 != ADS, whats missing?
Hi all,
I have been reading throught the manual that
accompanied the Samba 3.0(beta) distribution. I am
unable to understand ...
"Samba-3 is capable of acting fully as a native
member of a Windows 200x server Active Directory
domain.
However, please be aware that Samba-3 support the MS
Windows 200x domain control protocols also.
At this time any appearance that Samba-3 is capable
of acting as an ADS Domain Controller is limited and
experimental in nature."
In a less protocol and more ap...

smbpasswd backend, group-per-user, and primary gid not a domain group
After changing from 2.x to 3.0 I get these messages:

get_domain_user_groups: You should fix it, NT doesn't like that
I understand why this is: fred's group needs to be mapped like so

Am going thru the learning curve on using samba as a primary controller.
Samba is up and running just fine. However, I'm a bit confused on the
ntlogin.pol thing. I'm gathering, if all the workstations are winxp, I
need to do this??
"Go to the Windows 200x/XP menu Start->Programs->Administrative Tools

Select the domain or organizational unit"
I don't see the mmc snap-in. Or should I still be using poledit on samba
3.1?
If so, if someone has a source for the 3 co...

Samba 3 + LDAP as PDC join domain problem
Hi all,
I've setup Samba 3.0.5 + OpenLDAP (ldapsam) and everything work correctly.
However, while my Windows 200x workstation join the domain, I need to join it
twice. Here is what I do:
1. Go to Computer properties -> Computer Name -> Change
2. Enter the new domain name
3. Enter Administrator and password
then, it will return me that the user name cannot be found.
I've checked the LDAP directory...

Being a complex production networking environment, we replicated

LiteSpeed
Yo Zed,
Just curious -- what do you think of the LiteSpeed
server? Is it better than Lighty? Does it (gasp!) also
serve Rails apps like Mongrel? I think I read that
LiteSpeed doesn''t have proxying support.
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Fix passwd/shadow/group files? -- network architecture is always piecemeal
From: Feizhou

You're still artificially limiting your understanding.
Kerberos (with the MS extensions in the case of 200x/XP) is how objects authenticate each other and grant tickets for access in a Kerberos realm.
Samba can use Kerberos how it sees fit.
As a client/member server (with MS Extensions) to native MS ADS DCs,
or to 200x/XP clients in the absence of native MS ADS DCs.
The issue is when you have native MS...

WINS Server: Use Samba or Windows?
Hi,
The Samba documentation recommends that a Windows WINS server is used
for WinNT/200x clients, i.e.
http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/docs/man/howto/NetworkBrowsing.html#id2531484 says "In a mixed NT/200x server and Samba environment on a Wide Area Network, it is recommended that you use the Microsoft WINS server capabilities."
But there's no justification as to why Sam...

I understand the second part to this sentence. That is, Samba
provides 'pam_winbind.so' which allows, through PAM, users for
PAM-aware applications to be authenticated via WinBind to a Windows
NT/200x box. What I don't quite grasp is why the module "allows Samba
to obtain authentication information from any MS Windows Domain
Controller". I searched the mailing list, and found a thread in which
John Terpstra had said that "smbd can use winbind directly"

I want to download the "CUPS 1.1.x Windows NT/200x/XP Printer Driver for Samba",
however now I cannot find out where such drivers are.
I cannot download it neither from http://www.cups.org/software.php
nor from http://www.easysw.com/software.php

Domain Admins don't have enough privileges
...s (not root) who would be in Domain
Admins group, and would have the permissions to add machine to domain.
I can confirm that locally (I used sudo without password) as any of
the users of ntadm group, and each and everyone of them can add a user
to the passwd file.
They are also local admins on NT/200X/XP machines when they log in on
windows side, but neither of them can add a machine to domain via the
windows GUI.
The only user that can do that is the user root.
I have googled a lot, and all I could find was the user has to be
Domain Admin, and he has to have the unix rights to add the machine...
