security issues wint smbmount
Dear sirs/madams,
I am using smbmount (mount -t smbfs) version 2.2.8a for mounting shares
from a Windows 2003 server on a Linux machine.
This works fine, but there seems to be a security problem; ordinary
users can write to files, even when the Unix protection does not allow this.
The user cannot remove the file or create a new one, but can do what
he/she wants with an existing one.
Is this a

Compile Problem with 2.05a under Linux
I'm using Samba 2.03 under Slackware Linux and wish to upgrade to 2.05a,
but have been unable to compile from source. My system is Slackware
linux, kernel 2.2.9 running on a Pentium-200. I searched the current
mailing list archive for anyone with similar problems to no avail, so
I'm posting here.
Here is the output from 'make', after typing: './configure
--with-smbmount'

Samba 2.05a - Numerous Issues
We have recently upgraded to Samba 2.05a on HPUX 10.20 and 11.0 from
version 1.9 & 2.0. Since this upgrade, we have experienced the
following issues and problems:
1) Lost connections to samba drives from Win95 pcs.
2) Failure to authenticate mounted drives from NT machines.
3) Using smbstatus, getting "semaphores not started by root" errors
4) Several inexplicable error messages.

Problems with "locking" files with SAMBA 2.05a on Linux
I have a SAMBA configuration on my Linux system which works fine except
for one detail :
If two users try to open the same file, the second user does not receive
the customary warning that the file is already open.
I've set the following on the share in an attempt to get the DENY modes
working, even though some of them seem to only be for byte locking.
share modes = Yes
locking = Yes

Jet Direct Printers and Plotters
We have a HP Design Jet 650C Plotter which is hooked to the net via a
jetdirect nic. Now I dont have a clue on how to use this plotter over
the net. It doesent show up in the network neighborhood and I cant find
anything about jetdirect plotters in the Linux documentation or the
inet. The server is running Suse Linux 6.2 and Samba 2.05a.

Hi all Samba Gurus,
I have problems getting my Win98 box to talk to my Samba Server.

Please see the attached smb.conf file for details.
Here are my problems:
1. It seems samba does not like

hosts allow = <list of hosts>
I need to do

checking IMAP connection. Based on that experimentation, it seems that
when I try to verify certificate files with openssl, all checks out, but
when I try to check thing through IMAPS, things go ugly (see log below).
If I try same openssl s_client command on my web server, it gets
everything correctly. As result from this one, I've even tried to use

Working Passwd Chat for Unix Password Sync on Redhat 6.1
I have been trying to get the password sync working for Redhat 6.1 (samba 2.05a
rpm). I got
the PDC working this morning, so I'm happy. The FAQ section on the samba site
was very
helpful. The password sync was the only sticking point.
The default passwd chat script didn't work well
passwd chat = *New*UNIX*password* %n\n *ReType*new*UNIX*password* %n\n *passw

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
Hi all:
I am trying to transfer a file from a machine A to a machine B. I ran
a rsync deamon on machine B at a given port. Because there is a firewall
between these two machines, I opened the port on the firewall. Is this
enough to get rsync work through firewall?
When I tried the transfer, I got the following error messages.
my command:

Support of domain groups
We are running Solaris 7 with Samba 2.05a on the server side. The

We want only "special" NT workstation users to access this app. In

Virus scanner not scanning files on samba share
Right now, on our NT servers, I scan the users' directories nightly for
viruses. I've set up samba 2.05a on a linux server (rh 6.1). I've moved a
couple of users over for testing. Everything seems to be working great.
However, I cannot get our virus scanner (Dr Solomon) to scan files on the
samba shares. It recognizes the share, recognizes the files, but reports 0
