HOWTO install CentOS 6 on low memory computer or virtual machine (even 192MB RAM)
I've managed to install CentOS 6 on a 192MB virtual machine using LiveCD
install-to-disk graphical method.
This is not normally possible because of:
- hard-coded minimum supported memory in Anaconda installer - it will
show a message "You do not have enough RAM to install CentOS Linux on
this machine" if you try or force you to us...

How much memory is need to host a rails app?
I''m looking to host a low-traffic, personal blog. I already have a VPS
Linux host with 192MB of RAM. How much memory is need to run a rails app?
Considering that memory is scarce, I assuming LigHTTPD will be a better
choice than apache. What about MySql? Do I need more memory to host that
or should I consider sqlite instead? Is anyone else hosting a Rails a rails
app on a host with 192...

Using CentOS 4.4 on very old Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop; would like suggestions regarding using KDE/GNOME in low RAM and low disk situation
Hi;
I'm new to the CentOS list and I only have experience with CentOS 4.3/4.4
on desktops. I just installed CentOS 4.4 on a very old Dell Inspiron 3500
laptop. I choose the desktop option and then deleted the kde and gnome
packages because I have only 192mb RAM and 4gb disk (total). I'd like
suggestions on how to maximize the effective usage of the laptop with CentOS
4.4...as a minimum I want to do secure wireless web browsing. If KDE or
GNOME needs more disk/RAM than I have available is XCFE the only alternative
to the bleak Motif experience?...

will this machine handle it
Hi folks,
Right now I'm running * along with a lot of other apps on my firewall box,
which is a P-II 400 with 192MB of RAM. I have a single T100P card connected
to a channel bank that's using one FXO and two FXS ports.
I want to move * off to another computer (mostly because I think the other
apps on the current box are causing enough of a load to affect the sound
quality a bit). I'm looking for a co...

a question about swap space, memory and read.table()
...s with a error message" cannot allocate vector of size 7812 Kb ".
The Swap space is not used at all !
What's more, I found that the read.table() function is really a waste of memory.
> ft <- read.table("filepath")
> object.size(ft)
object.size(ft)
[1] 192000692
only 192Mb.
however, in the windows task manager it shows that this process takes
nearly 800Mb memory.
I used gc() to collect garbarge. Howerver it doesn't help.
Any guys have methods to release the wasted memory?
thank you all.

OT: OGG in the mainstream
...; I think when the real-time cbr encoding issues are sorted
> Vorbis (this is my experience with oddcast dsp, winamp and

I can't use the managed bitrate option in OddCast on my K6II-500 CPU!
(Overclocked to 525, WinXP Pro,192MB RAM). I would like to. Normal VBR
uses about 90% CPU. This seems too high. Perhaps some work will be
done on reducing CPU requirements and/or utilizing some CPU extensions
in the future.

Can anyone shed some light on what is going wrong? Thanks.

Different average bitrates on different machines
I am using OggEnc v0.8 (libvorbis rc2) (win32 cli)
I have access to two machines
Pentium 3 450mhz, 192mb, Windows 2000 (SP2)
Athlon 1400mhz, 256mb, Windows 2000 (SP2)
When I encode the same wave file on each machine at the same nominal
bitrate (96kbps), I get output files with different average bitrates.
107kbps on the Athlon, as opposed to 84kbps on the Pentium 3.
Anyone experienced this ?...

Memory management problem?
...about 159Mb although I do not have any new objects in my workspace
(there is a hidden object .Trace, but it is small).
(8) If I do
rm(list=ls(pos=1), pos=1)
however, the size of the workspace comes back to almost zero.
I am not sure if this happens on Linux since my Linux box only has 192Mb of
memory.
Is this the new memory management problem? Is there any way around it?
Thanks in advance,
Andy

CPU Utilization Weirdness
...Odd, I have them both running as background processes together with no
problem (then though I'm running FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE). And I didn't compile
with optimize flags. CPU utilization did hover around 40%, but that was
when I had it reencoding to a lower bitrate (320 to 190). PIII 450, 192MB.

Rsyncing a very large directory tree (over 50,000 files)
Hi,
I need to rsync a very large directory tree (over 50,000 files). This
is not a regular job, after the initial rsync is done, I can do a
nightly rsync and only a few files will change.
Is there anything I need to be aware of before doing this? I started
the script this morning, but it was still building the file list after
around 15 minutes. Is it better to do it using several

smbfs makes other processes hang
...The problem concerns the smbfs kernel module and smbmount. Smbfs makes other processes "hang". The only thing to do is to reboot the computer, not even "Kill -9" works.
I use a Linux system with the Redhat 7.2 distribution. It runs on a AMD 500 K6-2 processor with a memory of 192MB. The kernel is an unmodified 2.4.9-31 from Redhat. I have tried both samba-2.2.4-1.i386.rpm from one of your samba mirrors as well as 2.2.1a-4 from Redhat 7.2.
The problem accours when I use smbmount to mount a share from another computer and that computer goes down. There are two ways this could...

Bug-report: Booting DOS images from USB
Hi,
I'm doing a small hobby project writing some tools to put DOS boot images
and Linux rescue images on a USB stick.
For this I have partitioned my USB stick in 2 partitions, one 192MB
partition with a VFAT filesystem (for the normal use) and a second
partition with an ext3 filesystem.
My aim was to provide a graphical menu (grub) to access the different
images using memdisk. Since none of the DOS images would load using
grub+memdisk (and I tried MSDOS, PCDOS and FreeDOS), I...
