question about bigmemory: releasing RAM from a big.matrix that isn't used anymore
Hi all, I'm on a Linux server with 48Gb RAM. I did the following: x <- big.matrix(nrow=20000,ncol=500000,type='short',init=0,dimnames=list(1:20000,1:500000)) #Gets around the 2^31 issue - yeah! in Unix, when I hit the "top" command, I see R is taking up about 18Gb RAM, even though the object x is 0 bytes in R. That's fine: that's how bigmemory is supposed to work I guess. My question is how do I return that RAM to the system once I don't want to use x any more? E.g., rm(x) then "top" in Unix, I expect that my RAM footprint is back ~0,...

A few Newbie questions about RAIDZ
1. I have a 4x18GB drive setup as RAIDZ. Now when thinking about it in terms of RAID5 I would expect to get (4-1)x18 worth of drive space, but DF -h shows 4x18. Is this a bug or do I not understand? 2. Once again thinking in RAID5 terms if I have 4X18GB and 12X9GB drives and I want to make a RAIDZ of all of th...

On 6/4/06, Avuton Olrich <avuton@gmail.com> wrote: ...more stuff... Upon yet further investigation, compiled FLAC CVS on amd64, the 18GB raw file flacs just fine. I then sent the flac to the x86 machine and it decodes fine. So this seems to be a 32bit x86 encoding problem, only. -- avuton -- Anyone who quotes me in their sig is an idiot. -- Rusty Russell.

Software RAID & Ext3 v0.0.6b
I've just set up a brand new system with software raid1 (in degraded mode) with one IDE 20GB drive, using kernel 2.2.19pre16 with ext3 0.0.6b. It's split like this.. 32MB /dev/hda1 /boot 2GB /dev/hda2 / ~18GB /dev/hda3 /home all partitions are marked as 0xfd (autostart raid) with the patches from http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches for 2.2.17. And I've made all the ext3 filesystems with the -j option to create a hidden journal file. Everything works great ! But. When I plug the second dis...

problems with samba and Perc/2 RAID
Hi, We recently acquired a Dell PowerEdge 4300 with two PIII 500 Xeons and half a gig of RAM, running RedHat 6.1 out of the box. In addition, it has a PERC2/SC Single Channel RAID card for six 18GB LVD SCSI drives. The problem is that, while we're not doing anything fancy with samba, basic file share stuff, the load seems to spike whenever writes are done. When doing a large file copy, the load will steadily rise to about 7 or 8, and then the share stops responding, killing any file cop...

Hello, I am not sure if this is the correct Mailing list for the issue I have. I have a new system with 18GB of Physical memory on the system. I loaded CentOS 6.4. But when I boot into Dom0, I only see (xm info) 2GB of total memory? I set 1GB for Dom0, but I am not sure why the hypervisor does not see all the memory. Our major DBF has 65MB and the major NSX has 18MB. I think that is big and the problem is it, but system developer say that isn't. I don't want to come back to NT4, where the clipper system too crash....

flac with >4GB raw still does not work (CVS)
I'm attempting to flac a 18GB raw file, and as per 1328191 I compiled CVS, when it gets to 4GB it doesn't continue. I've tried stracing and get no output after a certain point. I also have tried oggflac and it is no different. I configured with no options or special CFLAGS and this is on a x86 machine. Is there anything...

sharing a ssd between rpool and l2arc
Hi, as Richard Elling wrote earlier: "For more background, low-cost SSDs intended for the boot market are perfect candidates. Take a X-25V @ 40GB and use 15-20 GB for root and the rest for an L2ARC. For small form factor machines or machines with max capacity of 8GB of RAM (a typical home system) this can make a pleasant improvement over a HDD-only implementation." For the upcoming

Oracle database on zfs
...ere is a guideline on how to configure ZFS on a server with Oracle database? We are experiencing some slowness on writes to ZFS filesystem. It take about 530ms to write a 2k data. We are running Solaris 10 u5 127127-11 and the back-end storage is a RAID5 EMC EMX. This is a small database with about 18gb storage allocated. Is there a tunable parameters that we can apply to ZFS to make it a little faster for writes. Oracle is using 8k block size, can we match zfs block size to oracle without destroying the data? $ zpool status zpraid0_e2 pool: zpraid0_e2 state: ONLINE scrub: none requested confi...

cvs bulid breaks on slackware
cvs code from this morning (about 9am PST) breaks on slackware 7.1 w/ gcc 2.95.2.1 with an undefined reference to session_setup_sia in session.o. this seems to be the culprit here: #ifdef HAVE_OSF_SIA #else /* HAVE_OSF_SIA */ session_setup_sia(pw->pw_name, ttyname); since i have no idea what that's trying to accomplish (and seems to be a bit backwards to me from looking

DO NOT USE Software Raid1 and Ext3
Conclusion: DO NOT USE SOFTWARE RAID-1 WITH EXT3 I've started with this conclusion cause i am positive that raid-1 and ext3 are causing data corruption. I've upgraded from 7.1 to 7.2 and from the first date i run into data corruption problems @ least once per day (i was monitoring once per day only) after 7 days we bought a brand new server cause the previous was very old and i thought
