Raid 1
Hi, Is there a tutorial on how to setup raid 1? I like to install CentOS 4.3 on a 160GB SATA drive and do a mirror on another identical 160GB SATA. C6 or C7 for an old netbook
...ld Ubuntu netbook-remix on it, and it really, *really* needs to be updated to something current. I, of course, would prefer CentOS.... The question is: I see that *if* the specs I just looked up (I'm at work, not home, where I could just turn it on, but they sound right) Atom N270 CPU, 2G RAM, 160GB drive - what should I put on it, C6 or C7? Upgrading the memory's not going to happen, so it's got to live with that size. Opinions (please, no flame wars), just what will be most responsive on a machine this small? mark

Does running redundancy with ZFS use as much disk space as doubling drives?
If I''m gonna use OpenSolaris, I will have to buy new hardware, which I can''t really defend at the moment. But I may be able to defend it in the near future if using redundancy on ZDF uses less disk space as simply getting extra drives and do identical copies, with periodic CRC checks of the source material to check the health. Or will I use as much drive space with redundancy?

ZFS Filesytem Corrpution
Hi, I have been seeing data corruption on the ZFS filesystem. Here are some details. The machine is running s10 on X86 platform with a single 160Gb SATA disk. CentOS Server Backup Options
...kly, and monthly copies. I want the daily copies of the data kept until the next week, and the weekly copy being kept for four weeks, and the monthly copies being kept for a year. The vendor is recommending a RD1000 Removable Disk device. This looks like it has great specs. Each cartridge holds 160gb (non-compressed) and the drive costs about $420 but seems that with each removable cartridge costing $128, we may be limited to how many cartridges we could have, thus perhaps not retaining backup instances as long as I like. I asked about a HP DAT160 tape drive. Each tape holds 160gb (non-compre...

cannot replace c10t0d0 with c10t0d0: device is too small
In 2007 I bought 6 WD1600JS 160GB sata disks and used 4 to create a raidz storage pool and then shelved the other two for spares. One of the disks failed last night so I shut down the server and replaced it with a spare. When I tried to zpool replace the disk I get: zpool replace tank c10t0d0 cannot replace c10t0d0 with c10t0d0:...

Rsync performance with large exchange database files
...ng a mixture of FreeBSD w/ ZFS+snapshots and rsync to backup all the servers at my day job. This works pretty good overall but on one server it's not working so well :) We have an Exchange 2003 server with 4 separate mail store databases. One of them is roughly 900GB the others are ~200GB, ~160GB, and ~50GB. Rsync seems to spend a lot of time trying to find the differences in the files. On the Windows server where rsync is kicked off there's very little CPU or RAM usage for the rsync client. On the server rsync (rsyncd, no ssh) is using around 70-85% of a cpu (well, half a cpu due...

Migrating Asterisk
...g for over two months without a hitch, and I've decided it's time to move things around a bit. It's currently installed on a 2.7GHz Celeron under RH9 installed on a 10GB "leftover" drive. Thanks to the strange marketing method called "Mail-In-Rebate", I have a fresh 160GB drive ($50), and I'm itching to install a GenToo Linux distro. I also have a 1.2ish GHz Duron with Mobo sitting around here, which may just be enough to power my (barely ever transcoding) asterisk install. Should be enough, even if one channel were transcoded occasionally, no? Let's say I...

Disk Activity Monitor
I have a USB disk connected to a Poweredge server. The USB Disk is a Mad Dog MegaVault with a 160GB drive installed. It's all working fine, but the external LED on the unit is not working. I'm currently running a script (yum-pull) for setting up a yum mirror and it sits for long periods of time seemingly doing nothing. I started the script this morning at 6:20 for my FC4 yum mirror and...

Initial backup prior to daily rsync backups
...day (there tend to not be too many changes -- mostly office-type documents, few pictures, that sort of thing, so limited bandwidth is not a problem). If I run rsync now, however, it is trying to copy over all the files since none exist on the local servers, and by my calculations copying that 160gb worth of data should be done some time in mid-February, 2010. I can make the 4-hour round trip out to the remote site with a USB hard drive and copy the files that way, but my concern is how to get the file structure, timestamps, permissions, etc copied exactly from the remote server > USB...

Dump problem on USB drive
Hi. I am running CentOS 4.3 on a small home server just dishing up mail, music etc. to the household. I had been doing irregular backups to a 160GB USB external drive /dev/sda1 mounted as /mnt/backup using tar. Then I read somewhere that dump was better so I tried that after clearing the drive (formatted as ext3). dump -0u -f /dev/sda1 /shared took a while to finish but gave no errors however ls showed no files and df -h showed /dev/sda1 to b...

EXT3-fs error (device md(9,1)) in ext3_new_inode: error 28
Hi, Subject line says it all. When one of the linux.org.uk machines got rebooted, it performed a full fs check of the main 160GB ext3 partition claiming it contained errors. During the check it found: Deleted inode 142279 has zero dtime. FIXED. The kernel message log contained lots of: EXT3-fs error (device md(9,1)) in ext3_new_inode: error 28 We had used up all the available inodes. Since the above message is generat...

is it possible to recover LVM drive from accidental Fdisk?
Hi all, Does anyone know if it's possible to recover an LVM partition from a drive that was fdisked? I accidently fdisk'd the wrong drive (had to fdisk a lot of 160GB drivers from old servers and one still has important data on that client now wants) by running fdisk /dev/sdc & deleting the partitions. The drive is still in a another machine and hasn't been rebooted yet, but there's no no partition on it. -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers SoftDux Webs...

Installation of CentOS 6 on KVM - Hangs
Greetings- I'm attempting to install CentOS-6 x86_64 to a virtual machine running via KVM on a Proxmox 1.9 system. The specs are 4x CPUs, 4GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. Installation proceeds fine using either minimal or netinstall CDs until installation of the selinux or qla2xx-firmware RPMs. At this point, the installation hangs, and never completes. I'm unable to see what is going on 'under the hood' on another TTY as the console does not appear...

[OT] CentOS 5 and Inspiron 6400 [WAS: CentOS 5 - Issues with multimedia]
Hi Gabriel, > I am having some issues with CentOS 5. [cut] > I am running a clean install of CentOS 5 i386 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 > (Core Due, 1GB RAM) with SELinux on "enforcing". I've just received my new 6400 (T7400, 2GB, 160GB, Vista Home Premium) and I'd like to install CentOS 5 too. With big surprise (looking at the partition table first and then, googling, http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htm) I found that Dell is used to use the whole of the four partitions (see the url above for details). Did you...

Expanding EVMS raid1 array
I started with two 160GB drives in RAID1 using EVMS on Centos 4.4. Both drives have now been replaced with 320GB drives but naturally are only offering 160GB (they were replaced individually at different times and self-recovered as they were RAID1. I cannot work out how to increase the size of the array to use all the av...
