tuning for samba server
...ba docs available, so aim looking for others tips besides the tcp tunings usually applied in smb.conf ? i am setting a server on a client site, with many clients (about 100), and i am using a real server hardware (an HP netserver with xeon procesor@2.8Ghz, 1Gig of RAm and fast scsi hdds (scsi 320 @ 15krpm). the budget can be stressed out for buying a raid enable server :-) . thanks for all your help. Image file or partitions over an iSCSI?
...o by another server if the first one fails 2) performances 3) live migration is a non mandatory option (i.e. I can suffer to shutdown machines and restart them with minor service interruption, maybe with a heartbeat script) My questions are: The server(s) will have a raid 1 with two 74GB sas 15krpm drives. Where do you would store your VMs? You would use partitions (i.e. a LUN for each VM) or images? Swap files could be on the local disks? Does a "local disk images and overnight mirror to the SAN" approach would be better in this case? Religion question (optional...): Waht would...

Asterisk Crackly Bad quality
I've freshly installed Asterisk on a Fedora C2 machine. Dual P4's, 2GB RAM. 15KRPM Drive. Using the default configs and added one Soft Sip phone. While listening to the demo the quality isnt very good. It's kind of crackly and skips a bit. Should the sound be better or is that just what you get using IP phones/Asterisk? (I ran the X-Lite phone). Nihal -----BEGIN PGP PUBL...

New system for recording - SCSI, SAS or SATA?
I'm in the process of specifying the hardware for some new Asterisk systems which will be running a substantial number of conferences with recording. I was wondering what there is to choose between SCSI, SAS and SATA disks, in terms of performance for this kind of application. I will be using dual drives with kernel-based software RAID1. Any advice from experience would be appreciated!

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi, as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that is mainly used for file

kvm cluster w/ c6
In our development lab, I am installing 4 new servers, that I want to use for hosting KVM. each server will have its own direct attached raid. I'd love to be able to 'pool' this storage, but over gigE, I probably shouldn't even try. most of the VM's will be running CentOS 5 and 6, some of the VM's will be postgresql database dev/test servers, others will be

JBOD recommendation for ZFS usage
Dear all Sorry if it''s kind of off-topic for the list but after talking to lots of vendors I''m running out of ideas... We are looking for JBOD systems which (1) hold 20+ 3.3" SATA drives (2) are rack mountable (3) have all the nive hot-swap stuff (4) allow 2 hosts to connect via SAS (4+ lines per host) and see all available drives as disks, no RAID volume. In a

bad I/O performance with HP Smart Array RAID
Hi all, I discovered lately that two of my XEN servers suffer from a really bad disk throughput - in domU as well as in dom0. All of them run Debian/Etch, Kernel 2.6.18-6-xen (orig. Debian) with XEN 3.2 (backported). The software versions seem to be ok for most machines: Lenovo A57 with S-ATA and (E8200, VT enabled): up to 90MB/s Shuttle, FB61 based, ATA-Disk (Celeron, no VT): up to

ext4, 4k sector alignment
I've mentioned this problem before but put off doing anything about it and maybe now someone can suggest the best solution. I have a 3-member RAID1 set where one of the members is periodically swapped and rotated offsite. The filesystem contains a backuppc archive which has millions of hardlinks that make it impractical to copy with a file-oriented approach. The current filesystem is

samba + xp "Delayed Write Failed"
Hello! Hardver: Windows XP Compaq Proliant DL360, Linux Compaq Proliant DL380. 2 pieces of processors Intel Xeon 3,2GHz, 2GB RAM, 6 gigabit interface (2 tg3, 4 e1000), Debian Woody, 2.4.31 vanilla kernel. 6 U320 SCSI 15krpm HDD, 2 HDD RAID1 system, 4 HDD RAID1+0 data. Every network cards connect at speed of 1000MB full duplex, with XP crosscable (but we've tried with gigabit switch, too, we have tried both types of cards). In the XP's (there are more of them) there are 2 pieces of interface at gigabit speed,...

Highly Performance and Availability
Hello everyone, I am currently running Dovecot as a high performance solution to a particular kind of problem. My userbase is small, but it murders email servers. The volume is moderate, but message retention requirements are stringent, to put it nicely. Many users receive a high volume of email traffic, but want to keep every message, and *search* them. This produces mail accounts up to

Some basic questions about getting the best performance for database usage
I''m new so opensolaris and very new to ZFS. In the past we have always used linux for our database backends. So now we are looking for a new database server to give us a big performance boost, and also the possibility for scalability. Our current database consists mainly of a huge table containing about 230 million records and a few (relatively) smaller tables (something like 13 million

shutdown -r / shutdown -h / reboot all hang and don't cleanly dismount
Hello -STABLE@, So I've seen this situation seemingly randomly on a number of both physical 9.1 boxes as well as VMs for I would say 6-9 months at least. I finally have a physical box here that reproduces it consistently that I can reboot easily (ie; not a production/client server). No matter what I do: reboot shutdown -p shutdown -r This specific server will stop at "All buffers

HELP! SNV_97,98,99 zfs with iscsitadm and VMWare!
I''m not sure if this is a problem with the iscsitarget or zfs. I''d greatly appreciate it if it gets moved to the proper list. Well I''m just about out of ideas on what might be wrong.. Quick history: I installed OS 2008.05 when it was SNV_86 to try out ZFS with VMWare. Found out that multilun''s were being treated as multipaths so waited till SNV_94 came out to
