ZFS support for USB disks 120GB Western Digital
Hey,
I have a portable harddisk Western Digital 120GB USB. Im running Nevada b42a on Thinkpad T43. Is this a supported configuration for setting up ZFS on portable disks ?
Found out some old blogs about this topic:

Does running redundancy with ZFS use as much disk space as doubling drives?
If I''m gonna use OpenSolaris, I will have to buy new hardware, which I can''t really defend at the moment. But I may be able to defend it in the near future if using redundancy on ZDF uses less disk space as simply getting extra drives and do identical copies, with periodic CRC checks of the source material to check the health. Or will I use as much drive space with redundancy?

Grub Error 22; no Windows
Hello,
I have a GridEngine setup with 5 subnodes and two RAIDS attached. I backed
up the OS drive - 120GB - to an external hard drive - 500GB - using
ddrescue. The OS drive is partitioned as:
sda1 has the OS and is about 7 GB
sda2 has /var and is about 4 GB
sda3 has swap and is about 1 GB
After backing up, there were 4KB of errors, but all at the end of the disk
around 118GB. This used to be a parti...

Deadlock with ATA disk on FreeBSD 4.8 Stable
Hi Soeren,
We encounter here a deadlock with a quite new ATA 120GB disk.
The disk worked good for about 3 weeks, but now we have a strange
problem.
There seems to be one defective file on the disk. fsck doesn't find
it, and if I do a
cat file > /dev/null
The machine locks completly. Serial console is dead, no remote DDB
via ALTBREAK possible anymore, no...

gmirror and gstripe
hail,
I have an old AthlonXP 1700+ running 7-STABLE:
FreeBSD xxx 7.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE #1: Thu Nov 13 23:54:59
BRT 2008 root@xxx:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/xxx i386
where I have two 750GB Seagate SATA Disks. They are divided as two slices,
around the first 120GB are gathered in gmirror, and what left is in
gstripe. so that's whats going on. if the machine locks, and fsck comes to
make its job, the box just gets slower and slower till I have to reset it
the hard way. to make it not lock after just 5 minutes I have to boot and
umount the "arrays&quo...

[OT] server partitioning question (rails + postgres)
Hi,
A bit off-topic, but I''m about to set up a remote Linux server
for Rails, with postgres and probably Lighttpd.
The server has two 120GB hard drives, one of which will just be
for nightly backups of the other.
I don''t intend to have any untrusted user accounts on the server.
The server will be dedicated to my own applications.
I''ll want to support lots of www clients, with pretty heavy database
access.
Currently...

[FTS Xapian] Beta release
...ian, with the objective
to replace fts_squat that is being deprecated.
Configuration is exactly the same as for fts_squat:
plugin {
plugin = fts fts_xapian (...)
fts = xapian
fts_autoindex = yes
fts_enforced = yes
fts_xapian = partial=2 full=20
This is installed on my production server (>120Gb of mailboxes), and I
will observe it during the coming days.
I will definitely appreciate that this is added in the core git of
docevot, in order to have a versionning of it, to remove squat and let
basic users able to avoid Solr alternative as much as possible.
Thanks

Re: ext3 / ext4 on USB flash drive?
...The important
thing to remember here is that not all parts of the storage device
will get used to the same amount. Some files will rarely change once
they are installed on the device; others will change a huge amount.
So a good Flash Translation Layer will spread out the wear so that if
you have a 120GB device, with flash cells that support 10,000 write
cycles, that ideally you can support up to 10,000 times 120GB == 120
TB worth of writes. Of course, that assumes 100% efficiency, which is
unrealistic. But some FTL's are incredibly bad, and in the worst
case, if they aren't spreading the...

Re-adding an existing brick to a volume
...ew disk to the same location.
I added the empty new brick to the volume:
gluster volume add-brick VOLUME rep 3 server2:/gluster/VOLUME/brick0/brick
There is about 2TB of data on the volume and they are all small files,
photos and documents. The whole heal process is rather slow. In 10 hours
only 120GB was copied to the new brick.
I remove the new brick:
gluster volume remove-brick VOLUME rep 2
server2:/gluster/VOLUME/brick0/brick force
I remounted the old brick in its place. Now I would like to re-add the
existing old brick back to the volume, so I have a replica 3 again.
But the add operatio...

32 seconds vs 72 minutes -- expected performance difference?
## QUESTION
I am sharing a 120GB folder with lots of files via Samba on a LAN (1Gbps
connection).
1) Doing an `ls -lR` on the server (on this folder) takes ~32 seconds,
compared with **72 minutes** on the client. Is this difference in
performance expected (due to network and protocol overhead)?
2) While the client is executing a...

Playing flac files from external hard drive
Hello,
I have a 500GB external hard drive with a lot of music in flac format. I
would like to find a way to play music directly from the drive through a
portable player. I do not own a portable player at the moment and intend to
buy one that can support the above requirement.
What I don't want to do is copy files across and remove them every time I
want to listen to music.
Is there a way to
