Apache Takes 10mins to Reboot
I have 5 FastCgiServer processes running on my Rails app (specified in httpd.conf) in Apache 2. When I restart Apache - I timed it - it takes just over 10 minutes to reboot. What up with that? The FastCgiServer processes also have the RAILS_ENV variable set to production. Of course, once it reboots the app is lightning fast and all is well. Is this just something I have to deal with by

GlusterFS startup problems
Hello, I'm quite new to GlusterFS. Recently I tried to install GlusterFS based on the instructions found in the *Install and run GlusterFS v1.3 in 10mins<http://www.gluster.org/docs/index.php/Install_and_run_GlusterFS_v1.3_in_10mins> * page in the wiki. After installation, I tried to execute GlusterFS by entering the following command: '*glusterfs --help*', wherein I received the message that the glusterfs command could not be found. J...

Problems with MS Office (Excel/Word) & Samba 3.0.11, (moved to testing 3.0.12-RC1) attn Jerry
...ive of nss_ldap and pam_ldap for the unix side - works well except for the more recent and horribly crippling MS Office bug. Tried disabling/veto'ing oplocks, but to no avail, so we've opted to try 3.0.12-rc1 on one of the two servers; all is well at this point thus far (been running about 10mins), figured I'd drop the list a line; Just a note - we've been having huge problems with MS Excel and Word running on samba 3.0.11, moved over to 3.0.12-rc1, (even though this is a production environment). ... Will advise and let you know if the problems persist, or if we find any new ones....

1.8.4 and write-through cache
...o 1.8.4 we were seeing terrible throughput on the nodes with 3ware cards (and only the nodes with 3ware cards). This was typified by see the block device being 100% utilised (iostat), doing about 100r/s and 400kb/s and all the ost_io threads in D state (no writes). They would be in this state for 10mins and then suddenly awake and start pushing data again. 1-2 mins later, they would lock up again. The oss''s were dumping stacks all over the place, crawling along and generally making our lustrefs unuseable. After trying different kernels, raid card drivers, changing write back policy on...

Client login delays - especially after reboot
I have just migrated to a new server and have Samba ver 3.0.12-5-SuSe running on a small network ( 7 win 98pcs) Logins are possible from all clients but morning logins (after client reboot) are delayed. It can take 2 or 3 attempts to successfully login. At each failed attempt the hour glass sits there for 30 seconds or so. logins usually succeed on the second or third attempt. I have searched

Help implementing a 43things-like ''activity'' measurement
I''m trying to implement something in my app akin to 43things'' main page, where more active topics are bigger than the less active topics. The difference in my app is that I''m building a business-oriented app and want to have a list of clients, where clients with recent activity are larger than others. My perhaps too-clever way of going about this is by feeding each job

Developing with Namespaces (was: Recent and upcoming changes to R-devel)
...is loaded. Debugging is seamless (via the 'debug' package, anyway). There is no need to re-load the sources or rebuild the package when you make changes-- the source version and installed version all get updated automatically. I've done a namespaced-package-from-standing-start in under 10mins, and could probably shorten that if a beer was at stake. I've also forced a few colleagues to build packages this way, and have had positive feedback. Of course, to get all these wonderful things, you do have to somewhat buy in to 'mvbutils' way of working. But that's not necessari...
