Backing up a stand alone system to a usb drive with rsync
I have a stand alone system with two drives / and /home on one and /var
on the the other. I'd like to backup the complete system to a usb drive.
I've tried dd however since it copies over everything, even empty space
it didn't seem very practical since for instance root only has 10GiB out
of 70 used. Would rsync be a suitable application to use for this or
will it only work over a network?
Thank you for any information

Amazon EC2 - building a minimal centOS ebs bootable image
Hello
Looking to build CentOS based micro EC2 instance bootable from Amazon

scratch or an existing minimal CentOS image that is bootable from EBS.
My server must must persist, as I cannot handle issues with a dynamic
server, so I want to use a server

I've made much more progress this time, but there are still outstanding
issues:
- neither "xe console" or VNC seems to allow ALT-F[2-6] keystrokes, so I
can't get other virtual terminals and therefore can't obtain any useful
log/status messages. This issue alone

BackupPC, per-dir hard link limit, Debian packaging
I realise that the hard link limit is in the queue to fix, and I read
the recent thread as well as the older (october I think) thread.
I just wanted to note that BackupPC *does* in fact run into the hard
link limit, and its due to the dpkg configuration scripts.
BackupPC hard links files with the same content together by scanning new
files and linking them together, whether or not they started

Next steps for optimization remarks?
Hello all,
In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq0q1hfzidg, Adam Nemet (cc'ed)
describes optimization remarks and some future plans for the project. I had
a few follow-up questions:
1. As an example of future work to be done, the talk mentions expanding the
set of optimization passes that emit remarks. However, the Clang User
Manual mentions that "optimization remarks do not really make
