zfs read performance degrades over a short time
...the standard ones that happen with a fresh install.
Does anyone know if this performance degradation is normal? If not, does anyone have hints on what I should do to track down the problem.
Thanks.

Wrong size on a domU partition
Hi.
I need more space on my domU server, so i create a file image to attach it
to the domU. But when i load that image in the domU, show a size very
different to the create.
I create the file with this command
dd if=/dev/zero of=/xen/domains/SRV03/opt-disk.img bs=1024k seek=30720
count=30720
(The idea is create an image disk with 30GB, but when i check the disk on
the domU show 64GB.)
attach the image to the domU
xm block-attach SRV03 tap:aio:/xen/domains/SRV03/opt-disk.img sdb1 w
so i access to domU and create the filesystem.

Wine and expanded memory
Greetings --
I have a DOS .exe file that I would like to run in Wine (the underlying
Windows is Win2K); it gives the error "Needs 1024K of expanded memory."
I have a PIF file which supposedly sets up this memory environment, but
.PIF files cannot be loaded by Wine.
Possible solutions:
* Make wine make the .exe think there is 1024K of expanded memory.
* Make wine run the .pif file using something like WinExec, thereby
worki...

a performance question
...all I''d like to thank everyone for making Xen so user
friendly. I thought I''d be sweating through this but it''s been pretty
straight forward (thanks to all the different tutorials on the net).
I''ve got a domU that I created with
dd if=/dev/zero of=vm_base.img bs=1024k count=4000
mkfs.ext3 vm_base.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=vm_base-swap.img bs=1024k count=1000
mkswap vm_base-swap.img
mount -o loop vm_base.img /mnt
debootstrap etch /mnt
this has worked fine and I''m happily continuing with the installation
But.
I have a performance question. For example.

Where is my bottleneck?
I'm running rsync via ssh on two machines connected with 100 Mbit/s
Ethernet cards (at high speed) via a Linksys switch. It's all right
here in a single closet. I'm sending large files (initial transfer,
nothing preexists on the destination machine) and seeing transfer rates
in the 2 Mbit/s range. The CPUs on both machines are more than 90%
idle, and I upped the --block-size to 256

xen with dynamic slices
Hi.
I want use xen with dynamic slices. For example, I have 20 domU based on
FreeBSD, xen hypervisor 3.3.1, Debian Lenny dom0 system.
All domUs have 80Gb LVM partitions, but realy they use 20 of this 80Gb and I
want to create more domU''s.
How can I do it? I know that some virtualisation have possibility to do
dynamic slices(4 example Virtul box)

NFS performance - default rsize
Hi list,
We've had an interesting NFS performance issue with the following setup.
Clients : CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5
Server : Solaris 10 kernel Generic_142901-08
Reading a file (not cached) with dd : dd if=file1 of=/dev/null
bs=1024k count=100
performance is around.. 700 kB/s !
/proc/mounts shows rsize has been negotiated to 1mB
If we force rsize to a smaller value, 32kB, the problem goes away and
we're back around 70/80 mB/s read performance.
Wiresharks show something interesting in the first (slow) case:
It seems that...

dd disk will not boot - can't find /dev/root
OS= CentOS 5.4, 64bit.
I've always had great luck using dd to copy entire disks, and booting on other systems.? However, I'm having difficulty with a couple systems.? I boot using an install DVD so the OS disk is quiet, and dd to my target disk:
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=1024k
/dev/sdb is the blank disk.? The disks are 2T.? After a few hours the operation is complete.? But when I try to boot the new disk on my other system, I get the following errors after the CentOS boot menu (it counts down to boot the default disk fine, then this error):

Memory failure!!!!
...sian modelling (geoR) it
stops at 1,096K and i get memory errors because it cannot
allocate a new segment of about 500K of memory.
I don't have Visual Basic so i cannot use the other commands
suggested in Help.
Also, if i am using memory.size(max=TRUE) i get a value
corresponding to about 1024K, and if i am using
memory.limit(size=NA) i get a value of about 4000K.
How can i force R to use more memory?
thank you for any suggestion,
Monica

How to install an Ubuntu DomU on Ubuntu 10.04 Dom0
Hi,
I''m a newbie in VM/Xen. As a first step to do some study/experiment on VM, I
want to install Ubutnu (10.04) as DomU on top of Ubutu (10.04) Dom0.
I need some direction to stat with:
- how to install the DomU image
- how to configure the network address
I''d be greatly thankful to you for providing some useful link to this end.
Thank you in advance.

ZFS vs. Apple XRaid
...ystem works fine, too:
(1) Running a ''find . -type f -print'' on a directory with a total of 46450
files/subdirectories in it takes about 90 seconds, yielding an average I/O
size of 64 at around 2000 kr/s according to iostat(1M).
(2) Running a ''dd if=/dev/zero of=blah bs=1024k count=128'' takes about 18
seconds at almost 7MB/s (this is a 10/100 network). To compare how this
measures up when not doing any file I/O, I ran ''dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024k
count=128 | ssh remotehost "cat - >/dev/null"'', which took about 13
seconds.
