I do. Note that this is from the restored and working 4.13 VM. I
assume that the 4.17/4.20 upgrade did not remove these. Is that a
correct assumption? Would winbind even start without these?

Rowland, you nailed it. I had both libpam and libnss installed, but they were not automatically upgraded together witn winbind and samba. They were still on 4.17 from the staged upgrade, but now updated to 4.20. And the shares are working again!
