oh and no i found no mention on website of it. the persons name was bjorn who mailed me. if he made this decisio or not i am not to know but who did came up with this idea that has seen bunch of mirrors not update needs to publicly explain their reasons for making them useless, im no guru but ive not got the dumb, rsync ssl which means call external scripting and not like http to https, is pointless on public repositories, when they are syncing public files that will no doubt share not on ssl anyway. maybe give mirrors teh choice to use rsync ssl or rsync proper stupud, and that person makes this grief for its end users who rely on ftp mirrors over the current unusable download.samba.org obvious no thought was give to repercussions for their action On Thu, Dec 19, 2019 at 2:15 PM Laura Steynes <laura.steynes72 at gmail.com> wrote:> this is hopeless, ive given up trying to update samba, might as well go > back to win server this weekend unless someone can send me a ftp mirrorlist > or url to samba.org page with this list > > On Fri, Dec 13, 2019 at 8:29 PM Rowland penny via samba < > samba at lists.samba.org> wrote: > >> On 13/12/2019 10:24, Laura Steynes wrote: >> > i have full speed from the mirror, it is samba.org <http://samba.org> >> > that is unusable to me >> > the mirror is outdated by many version as you should know look at 4.9. >> > you see is only 15. >> > >> > I jest viewed email from someone at samba saying they changed the >> > rsync to ssl only, >> >> OK, who was that ?? >> >> Why didn't you reply to the thread ? >> >> Also, is this posted anywhere on our website and if not, why not ? >> >> Rowland >> >> >> >> > and the mirrors were told couple weeks before all around that time so >> > it seem many mirrors not bothered to change so will stay outdated for >> > ever maybe >> > >> > On Fri, Dec 13, 2019 at 7:45 PM Rowland penny via samba >> > <samba at lists.samba.org <mailto:samba at lists.samba.org>> wrote: >> > >> > On 13/12/2019 09:27, Laura Steynes wrote: >> > > oops i forget, I only try, the ftp mirrors since www mirrors >> > died long >> > > ago, they replies but is 2 versions outdated >> > > even mirrorservice.org <http://mirrorservice.org> >> > <http://mirrorservice.org> >> > >> > The mirrors have nothing really to do with us, but I repeat, this >> > looks >> > like something to do with your end, running this: >> > >> > sudo wget >> > >> ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.samba.org/stable/samba-4.11.2.tar.gz >> > >> > Results ultimately in this: >> > >> > samba-4.11.2.tar.gz 100%[=========================>] 17.66M >> > 4.03MB/s in 4.8s >> > >> > If it is taking you a long time to download, then it is likely to be >> > something between your keyboard and the mirror ;-) >> > >> > Rowland Penny >> > >> > Samba team member >> > >> > >> > >> > -- >> > To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the >> > instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba >> > >> >> >> -- >> To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the >> instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba >> >
I'm sorry you are so frustrated. Try to take a step back for a moment. It is a stressful time of year for so many of us. On the point at hand, it downloads fine for me: https://download.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/samba-4.11.4.tar.gz However this is the normal case for network problems, they tend to be reproduced only between some particular endpoints. It might be worth speaking with your ISP or at least determining via network tools where the packet loss is. Perhaps you have a very poor IPv4/IPv6 path to our server for example? Finally, we don't run official mirrors any more due to concerns we had about a decade ago where they were serving less-than-safe-for-work advertisements. Mirrors mattered a lot in the 1990s, less so now (at our scale anyway). Laura, Please don't impune our hard-working sysadmin team. They work tirelessly to keep Samba safe for us as Samba Team members and for you and all our users. The integrity of our code distribution is very important to Samba and we don't wish to be encouraging the redistribution of Samba elements without confirmation of the origin, which is what a good TLS layer provides. This is the same as why samba.org downloads are only over https for example. Samba, as far as I am aware, has no official mirrors, so I would suggest that you download Samba from here: https://download.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/ If you are using Debian or Ubuntu 18.04, you can find packages here: http://apt.van-belle.nl/ If you are using Centos 7, you can find packages here: https://nova.polymtl.ca/~coyote/dist/samba/samba-4.11.4/ Getting abusive will get you no where, especially when the problem seems to be coming from your end.
