But I do see the protocol version against each client connection in
smbstatus output as below,

What about issuing 'smbstatus -b'? This displays the protocol.

very interesting; that was exactly what I was looking for. I am on version
4.1.17 and do not have this:
Samba version 4.1.17-Debian
