-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I'm trying to build a solid samba(smb) network. I realize I will have to learn how to administer and connect other network software. I would like to lean toward building an AD type samba environment. So far the network software I believe I need to make this happen is: DNS(I want to use bind9), Kerberos(I want to use MIT), LDAP(openLDAP of course), I believe I also need sasl, and of course a stable version of samba. I have a great deal of reading ahead of me, but I would like to know what other software I might be missing here? Direction would be most helpful. Thank you for your time, erick -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJMoO7eAAoJEERE2zkyxRdkT2QH/2vE/Mw/LHcwxNc1ngriv+fm TJBx3r3qxKkp7UnprnNCwZL18B19GDU3TTEE3u1XzMaSEb9hN0ttKJfDOtoq8HgF UfBt0TbQfANQrEvo1Sem35rcJyhNRO2mUu9VPlKZTDbM7gQCQopg5cWjHObMWKFM /QQHwE46W3M0Yd7DVoSGadTS+9FEkwlsRlsbfLl+LI5NlnNgTzPLTEh9v54pz20T uGcmKQ9hR9PagzAv/LxDJbotpUDdvMfrzQ3zeEF4JKQemLZmQdNS//JqVGxSACv2 bEhJBoy5GQd0K6lRQcLzDeS558AH96urGqOON78u+pOnaOPRHybtm3Pj7JSbTRY=hhp2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
If you are starting with a clean machine, you can probably pick an OS distribution that already has Samba included. A fairly recent version of Fedora Core Linux (12 or 13) should have samba bundled with it (along with OpenLDAP and kerberos.) I would guess that most current Linux distros include Samba. You would want something that has Samba 3.4.x or 3.5.x which are both being maintained and should support Windows 7. Solaris and OpenSolaris include Samba 3.0.x, which is now at a dead end. Compiling a newer version of Samba on Solaris can be a major challenge. http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7 On 09/27/2010 03:22 PM, ERIK wrote:> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Hello, > > I'm trying to build a solid samba(smb) network. > I realize I will have to learn how to administer and connect other > network software. > > I would like to lean toward building an AD type samba environment. > > So far the network software I believe I need to make this happen is: > DNS(I want to use bind9), Kerberos(I want to use MIT), LDAP(openLDAP of > course), I believe I also need sasl, and of course a stable version of > samba. > > I have a great deal of reading ahead of me, but I would like to know > what other software I might be missing here? To see a reasonable example of how this is done, take a look at what TurnKey linux did for a PDC replacement: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/domain-controller Jack On 09/27/10 01:22 PM, ERIK wrote:> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Hello, > > I'm trying to build a solid samba(smb) network.
