Do we still need to add the users/machines to the /etc/passwd file with
Samba 3.0?

What documentation did you use when setting up Samba 3.0?

Not necessarily. If you're joining to an existing domain, you can use
Winbind to link users from the domain into Unix. I believe you can do
the same thing with LDAP.

covers almost all aspects of setting up and using Samba 3.0.
