samba - Mar 2002 - connecting mac os 9.1 client

We just got an imac on our network here and I need to connect it to my 
existing samba 2.2 server.  We have several windows shares running at 
the moment on a Redhat 7.2 machine running kernel 2.4.7-10.  The Mac 
client is running  OS 9.1  and is able to connect to the internet 
through  and receive DHCP from my Linux router\firewall.  I have ftp 
running on the server as a last resort so people can get necesarry 
files, but that is a pain in the ass - is there anyway that this mac 
client can login and authenticate through samba and get to the files?

Not through Samba, but you can use Netatalk.  Sections 3.4 and 5.1 of this
doc should point you in the right direction.
