Has anyone used the SGI XFS boot disc for RedHat 7.2? We are looking at it as an easy alternative for installing ACL supported Samba. I was wondering, does it have native ACL support if you install Samba (2.2.1a) from the initial install? Any pointers would be appreciated. Regards, Alan B. I've actually never built a default install of RedHat 7.2 on any machine that's got 7.2 on it. The ACL stuff for XFS is quite nice and at least samba-2.2.2 is using them on one of my boxen here. It's usually a good idea to make your /boot partition ext2 though as more of the rescue tools can mount ext2 and not single floppy utilities can mount xfs. However if you're putting it all on RAID that doesn't much matter, as mounting a RAID partition is sometimes just as difficult. I have used the SGI-XFS boot cd and it has been an easy way to implement acls and lvm. In order to get samba to work with it from an rpm, I downloaded the source rpm, made the appropriate changes to the SPEC file, and built the new rpm. I have just added XFS support quite easily. I have two RAID1 sets. Both were initially ext3. The first was the main operating system install. The second was empty and was going to store just the data files. First I downloaded all the non 'devel' files from ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/download/latest/cmd_rpms/i386/ and installed/updated them. Then I download the Redhat kernel RPM from :- ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/download/latest/kernel_rpms/i386/contributed- RH-updates/2.4.9-31-RH7.1-RH7.2/kernel-2.4.9-31SGI_XFS_1.0.2.i686.rpm I installed the kernel RPM which did everything including adding the kernel boot options to grub. All I needed to do was to change the grub config to load the XFS kernel by default. (bestbits.at mods). We were wondering if there was anything easier to
setup for less knowledgeable techies that they may hire here in the future.

We'll probably evaluate XFS, but I don't really see any differences

that and ext3 (if you know of one, please smack me in the face with it).
