Hi I have recently downloaded the 2.2.2 version , binary format and also the software depot. Already build - software deport Installation is fine a but when trying to run ./smbd -D , it drops out then I start ./nmbd -D. However when I start the nmbd, it errors saying that it is already running. When doing a ps -ef | grep mbd it shows nmbd running. After compiling the binaries The compilation is not without a few Warning messages, but it seems ok. When running ./smbd -D it drops again also running ./nmbd -D it also drops out. We have had a previous version of samba running on this machine, my main query is that do you a place where you keep archives of old binaries, so that I can get the system working again. regards> Aslam Ghumra > Product Services Consultant > ________________________________________ > > CMG Wireless Data Solutions (UK) Limited > > 2nd Floor No. 2 Trinity Park > Birmingham > West Midlands > B37 7ES > United Kingdom > > Direct: +44 (0)121 787 0155 > Phone: +44 (0)121 787 0000 > Fax: +44 (0)121 787 0999 > E-mail: aslam.ghumra@cmg.com > >Confidentiality: This e-mail including any attachments is intended for the above named addressee(s) only and contains confidential information. If you have installed a binary version, then I assume you had a working pre-installed samba that came with your distribution of unix. Various different versions of samba produced by vendors have different files in different places (e.g. smb.conf on Slackware 8.0 is in /etc/samba in v7.0 it is in /etc and in source versions it is usually in /usr/local/lib/samba) so it is advisable to use the package control system on your OS to remove old versions before installing new versions. Also, I would reccommend you get the package for samba from the place you got the original, which in the case of a preinstalled version would be the installation media (cd, floppy, ftp etc.) Hope this helps. Hi Martyn / Samba Team thank you for that information. I had removed the old version but I can probably resotr it from a month end backup tape. However I have just downloaded the 2.2.3 version (not a) and I still get the same problems. I have disabled gcc and using the HP C Ansi compiler. everything configures fine with warnings but no errors, and I run the make fine. There must be something I'm doing wrong as my other sco / aix boxes are fine. Hi Aslam, I have noticed a problem with the packaging scripts that create the samba.depot - it creates the var and var/locks file in /var/usr/local/samba and /var/usr/local/samba/locks; of course the actual directory that you would expect it to be in is /usr/local/samba/var and /usr/local/samba/var/locks. I have submitted a patch to get this resolved, but in the meantime, perhaps that depot that you are pulling was created with these packages; if so, then you should be able to create by hand the /usr/local/samba/var subdirectory, edit the /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf file to increase your log level to 10, and be able to get some logs to see why smbd and nmbd are failing. I have noticed similar symptoms when the directory samba expects for var is missing; it cannot create the files in var/locks, and fails, but since the LOGS also go in the var subdirectory, there's no debug trail. Let me know if this helps, Don -----Original Message----- From: Aslam Ghumra [mailto:aslam.ghumra@cmg.com] Sent: Friday, February 08, 2002 7:42 AM To: 'samba@samba.org' Subject: RE: [Samba] Samba 2.2.2, queries Hi Martyn / Samba Team thank you for that information. Dear Aslam Ghumra, Happy New Year and I pray that 2004 brings you good health, prosperity and every success. I would be grateful for taking a little time to read this email as normally everybody is not interested in what I am in i.e. tracing my history. My name is Sirajuddin Ghumro. We Ghumros are Sindhis and have permanent residence in District Sukkur and Khairpur of Sindh Province in Pakistan. I am in search of our origin - some say we came to this part of the world with Mohamed Bin Qasim when he conqured Sindh but I have not found any traces in the history in support of this. There is a famous tale in the family that either in Tuzuk-e-Babari or Tuzuk-e-Akbari, there is a mention of a Ghumro very close to the King. In 1979 my uncle went to Egypt on WHO training programme. He came across a street called "Kamrah" and he was told that we in fact the word Ghumro or Ghumra is the corrupted version of Kamrah as in Arabic there is sound like "gh". We have Jhumra here in the Punjab Province. It gives me immense interest to learn about you. Who do you think relate to Ghumro or Jhumra or are you a totally separate tribe. I was in the UK first of week of November, had I looked your name before that I would have contacted you. Anyway, this can happen again. I would be grateful for your little more time to tell me about Ghumras. Best Regards.
