what version of samba?
how is authentication currently handled with samba (i.e., smbpasswd)?
Samba 2.2.2 did add support for using ldap as the user/password database,
but it is (admittedly) broken in places. There are other patched versions of
samba that do work well with ldap (see http://sking.mesd.k12.or.us/)
