We experienced the same issues with Excel and Word. I found that if you set the
configuration setting in smb.conf
[global]
oplocks = yes
oplocksII = yes
oplock break wait time = 10
seems to improve the performance. For some reason (unknown) if samba sends an
oplock break request to fast, the win9x and win2k machine seem to miss it. This
causing the machine to hang for about 30 sec.
Try it and let me know.
