I've got Samba 2.0.6 set up for domain logons, and they kinda work. However, about 2 out of 3 times it doesn't work on the first try. Almost always, my log on succeeds if I continue trying, usually 2-5 more times. The workstation is Windows 98. I can't roll this out to my clients until I can get this to work every time, on the first try. I've looked through the list archives, and I see some mention of problems without having reverse DNS, which I do have, and some problems with NT servers on the network, which I have none of, I think (and tcpdump doesn't show any traffic between the client and any other servers, but I'm on switched Ethernet, so I might not be seeing everything). It seems as if the client doesn't have some information that it should or is not certain that my Samba server is the correct server, because the conversation between the two appears to be the same. I've also set the log file to be %m.log, and watching the log for this particular host shows no traffic. Here's a sample of the tcpdump output: 18:16:47.085661 eth0 < win98-client.netbios-ns > samba-server.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): REGISTRATION; REQUEST; UNICAST 18:16:47.085823 eth0 > samba-server.netbios-ns > win98-client.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): REGISTRATION; POSITIVE; RESPONSE; UNICAST 18:16:47.581506 eth0 < win98-client.netbios-ns > samba-server.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): RELEASE; REQUEST; UNICAST 18:16:47.581668 eth0 > samba-server.netbios-ns > win98-client.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): RELEASE; POSITIVE; RESPONSE; UNICAST 18:16:48.559052 eth0 B win98-client.netbios-dgm > 10.0.0.255.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP (138) 18:16:48.559297 eth0 > samba-server.netbios-dgm > win98-client.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP (138) 18:16:48.560108 eth0 < win98-client.netbios-ns > samba-server.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): REGISTRATION; REQUEST; UNICAST 18:16:48.560270 eth0 > samba-server.netbios-ns > win98-client.netbios-ns:NBT UDP PACKET(137): REGISTRATION; POSITIVE; RESPONSE; UNICAST 18:16:48.560304 eth0 < win98-client.1036 > samba-server.netbios-ssn: S 14544700:14544700(0) win 8192 <mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK> 18:16:48.560339 eth0 > samba-server.netbios-ssn > win98-client.1036: S 2925412821:2925412821(0) ack 14544701 win 32120 <mss 1460,nop,nop,sack OK> (DF) 18:16:48.560678 eth0 < win98-client.1036 > samba-server.netbios-ssn: . 1:1(0) ack 1 win 8760 18:16:48.560810 eth0 < win98-client.1036 > samba-server.netbios-ssn: P 1:73(72) ack 1 win 8760>>> NBT And my smb.conf looks like: [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = SMB Server security = user log level = 2 load printers = yes guest account = guest log file = /var/log/samba/log log file = /var/log/samba/clients/%m.log max log size = 10240 #socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 #wins support = yes local master = yes domain master = yes preferred master = yes domain logons = yes os level = 65 dns proxy = no encrypt passwords = true browseable = yes map to guest = Bad Password load printers = yes printcap name = /etc/printcap logon script = logon.bat time server = yes password level = 10 username level = 10 [netlogon] comment = Domain Logon Service path = /home/samba/netlogon # public = no writable = no browsable = no # Other shares clipped -- W.
