samba - Mar 2001 - unix password sync problem

Dear All,

I run samba 2.0.7 on FreeBSD, client is WinME

the problem is that if I do
as a normal user on UNIX console
 smbpasswd -r myserv -U test1
- passwd is called as if by root (does not ask for the old password)

run on WinME
 net password \\myserv test1
- passwd is called as if by test1 (does ask for the old password)

I did not dig deep into logfiles, but may be it is a known
bug-o-feature? If not - what to look for in the logs?
